Northern California Friends,

We're relocating (back) to California this summer, and I working from home in a "live anywhere" role. We're trying to decide where to live. Our primary considerations are 1.) excellent schools and 2.) finding a place build our dream home. After an exhausting search in the Bay Area and finding nothing appropriate, and realizing that schools in the wine country aren't as good as we'd hoped, we're looking seriously at some property in Loomis. We're thinking of three acres or so and have a couple of parcels identified.

I'm wondering if any of you live there or near, or have specific experience with the area that you might share with me?

Any thoughts on the people in the area?

Any personal knowledge of schools and local amenities?

What's your impression about the weather? Reportedly, its a couple of degrees cooler on average in Loomis than Roseville or Sacramento.

Any other ideas on Northern California towns with excellent schools and property available?

Perhaps this is an odd thing to ask, but if you're out taking a casual ride in the area, I wonder if you'd be interested in driving by some addresses and giving me your general impressions?

Thanks for anything you might offer. I'd value your opinions. And I'm looking forward to riding with you all when out there!

Barry,

That is a really pretty area and good location. There should be lots of good riding close by as well. Sorry I don't know much about the schools and stuff. I've been to many weekend workshops at Sierra College in Rocklin. I think there are a couple of big high-tech businesses in the area so I'm guessing the school system in the area is probably pretty good.

Good luck in your search,

Roger

I have cousins (obviously 2nd cousins: sons and daughters of cousins) who live in the Tri-city area of Rocklin-Loomis-Penryn. Their children range from late grade school to high school and they like the schools there. Of course, there may always be 1 or 2 teachers, but overall the ratings are high.

That's a great area! Once you're removed from the I-80 corridor the properties are in rolling foothills. There are many areas North of I-80 that I've seen where people own 3-5-10 acre parcels, most of what I've seen like that are between the Tri-cities/Newcastle and Lincoln (on Hwy 65). These areas are semi-remote and will require a well for water and a septic system rather than city/county water & sewer, but you likely know that.

All of these little, historic communities have quaint shopping districts (Rocklin and Loomis along Taylor Rd./Pacific St.) and are close to major shopping (Galleria at Roseville) and hospitals.

Everything is the Sacramento Valley is HOT in the Summer, even Auburn can see 100 degrees, and the terrain turns "golden" unless it is irrigated. BUT the Sierras 60 miles to the East.....the Pacific is 90 miles to the West.

I'm 15 miles South of downtown Sacramento but there are others who are much closer and knowldgeable about the area. I'll PM them to get in touch with you. Most of us can get away on a Saturday and look at prospective property and take a picture or two or three.....

Mike said most of what I was thinking too, but I'll add: I don't know what you "do," or if it involves commuting. There's a very tough commute from that area into Sacramento, and it's called I-80. Gets pretty choked up certain hours, and sometimes it can go on for quite a while. Like not just 7 - 9 a.m. On the other hand, we have lane splitting. :)

If you want to PM some addresses, I happen to be retired. ( :p @ MM2) Glad to ride past most anytime too.

Maybe I should add, what we think of as a "tough commute" might not really be all that tough to some of our SoCal or Bay Area brothers. It's just "Sacramento tough." And that's the "Galleria" in Roseville. I like it here, myself, hot as it is. And you won't be noticing that "degree or two" in the summer, if it exists.

And you'll have to change your name to Mike, of course.

Yes, and the eastbound commute home is no fun, either! It won't take long to learn which surface streets to use where possible.

And that's the "Galleria" in Roseville.
Of course it is....my big fingers hit the wrong key.

.....and buy a blue FJR like O.M., SacramentoMike,Hycle and some other guy whose name escapes me at the moment...... ;)

Mike(s), Michael, Roger, thanks for the advice and the thinking. It sounds as though you're validating our ideas, and the Mrs. is digging into the schools research, which has so far impressed us.

Yea, I was a little dubious on any sort of temperature break, too. Having lived in Sac, Chico, Davis and the Placerville area, I know what to expect, for better or worse. After Massachusetts, where we've usually enjoyed the seasons (until this winter), we're looking forward to warmer weather and going to the snow when we'd like to rather than having snow come to us!

I'm in an amazing position where I have no commute. I'm an executive for a major insurance firm, but I work from home about 80-90% of the time. No commute! My wife will commute to the Bay Area a few times a month, but that's not a critical concern. She can drive in lighter traffic times.

As we nail down some addresses, I'll post or email those.

And MadMike, my Blue Kazoom is, in fact, an '05!

Thanks, guys! Great feedback.

I used to work in the snow, and after 5 years of dealing with the Sierras every day...I don't even go there for fun!

There are many who travel to the bay area daily from the foothills. Not my cup-of-tea but I understand the reasoning. Uhm...with gasoline prices rising daily, the logic may change for the ddaily commuters.

There is a train that runs to the bay area daily. IIRC, more than one and designed for the commuters. If that happens to coincide with her schedule and needs it's a viable option: Lookie Here and read the responses for more information. That could be the4 beginning of your search.

I-80 East traffic builds in Vacaville starting around 3:30, chokes in Davis. The last 25 miles from I-5/I-80 interchange past Roseville can be brutal if one isn't patient.

Mike, Mike and Roger beat me to it  I love Loomis, a great little area to live in. Although not so little lately. Built up a lot from only 10 years ago but nothing to spoil it's charm.

The 1-2 degrees cooler still only makes you say it's "freakin', stinking HOT" instead of "stinking, freakin' HOT."

PM'ed w/ housing info

Kind of funny, after what I said about that tough Loomis-to-Sac commute, but today's msn.com home page featured a list of the 10 easiest commuting cities. According to them, "Hartford Conn edged out Sacramento for the 10th spot on that list. Well, I did say it was only "Sacramento tough," and even still, that I-80 corridor is one of the worst spots around here. Just puts another perspective on it.
