Thoughts on Shinko Tires for Gen 1 FJR?

Shinko used to be known as **** tires for people who were more interested in lowest cost instead of grip, durability, or safety. You know, the same ones that ran their other tires until air was showing through the tread instead of changing them when they got down even with the wear bars.

Usually the guys who bought Shinkos were students with bills past due and needing tires to get inspected or simply to get to class/work. The same guys that bought the cheapest car tires (with a tread width narrower than the sidewall) to simply get them down the road a few hundred more miles before the next payday.

Has that changed?

I ran a set of the Ravens a couple of years ago...not much fun in the twisty's. But if I had another set of rims, I'd use them for commuting.

You hit the nail on the head. I bought a Cheng Shin tire for my Suzuki back in the mid 80's when I was in college. Cheapest tire I could find to meet my starving college student budget. Those tires sucked! Don't remember how long they lasted, but do remember the wobbly feeling which was confirmed by a friend following me that told me the rear tread wiggled back and forth.

That said, I did run a set of Conti Motions on the FJR and they were fine, especially considering the price. But I'm back to the PR2's.

FYI, The translation for Shinko is "Skid Mark" because the R&D guy at the factory that test rode them had skid marks on his underwear and thought it was fitting.

I've ran them and I know people who ran them with no issues.

I think Queensland Ken's experience was just a bad tire.

The cheap price on the SHINKO'S can be related to trying to gain market share.

I've been using Ravens on my 05 for 5 yrs with no problems, wet or dry, usually 1500-2000 more milage than the expensive tires I tried, usually around 6-7 k on the rears. I don't know what tire that de-laminated that had the skip center groove. It doesn't look like the Ravens. I ride solo,80%,the other 20% 2 up towing a UNI-Go trailer.

I love the guys that think if they pay 3 times as much for something, that it's got to be 4 times better!

I've been running shinko advance 005 for 2 seasons with no problems, and better mileage than the so called "top brands".

I think you have to run with what you have confidence in. It is YOUR life after all, and nobody can make you ride something different.

Whatever you use, I would never make a decision to use slippery tires to save a few bucks. Use what works for your riding style...noting that in an emergency you may need more grip than normal.
