Looking for a replacement to the MADCO throttle lock for the 06 and 13 FJR.

Yes, I know. Plenty of old threads from back in the day.

Ordered both the Vista Cruise 'universal' and 'application specific' and both look like crap.

Need something for old Arthur ItIs hand...

Anything new?

I forgot to add that I'm running DL650 hand guards too... which complicates things?

^^This. I got one from a kindly guy in the deep south and I love it.

Back in the day I used a Vista Cruise. Looked ehhh with a rigged up mount but I still say it was the best $16 I ever spent on a bike. Lasted about 7 yrs, flawless operation until it finally started getting finicky.

 
It's been a long time but as I remember, I drilled a small hole through the square tab on the Vista as well in the metal housing for the cables being careful to locate the hole between the cables. If I remember this part correctly, it may have been at the seam where the two haves of the housing met....maybe not... One small, short black sheet metal screw later I had a clean install without any funky looking brackets. Since you will be moving the grip slightly back on the bar to accommodate the space now occupied by the Vista Cruise, add a couple of stainless washers at the bar weight end to keep the grip from "dragging" against the weight. It won't work if you have factory heated grips as the throttle tube is part of the grip. But it worked great for all of my other non headed grip FJR's.

I did a lot of research on various products then found out the MADCO is still available just not listed on website; I'm going that way again.

If not avail, I liked the:

  1. Excel
  2. Kaoko
  3. Throtttlemeister

However, I am concerned about fitment for two reasons.

1. Yamaha's usually have threaded and not open bar ends. I am fairly certain this is the case with the FJR1300.

Yes. I'm currently run Salamander bar end weights and they have long threaded screw to secure.

That makes sense. If you are mechanically inclined and are OK with doing some modifications, you may be able to get the V-Strom Kaoko to fit your FJR. However, please be aware that once you install or attempt to install the part, we would be unable to take it back as a return.

I actually ordered Vista cruises.. one universal one specific and both don't work well on the FJR. The universal's securing bar goes across start switch. The 'specific' wasn't even close to any clean anchor point and I don't want to use ty-raps

I had to do some modification to get that lock to work on my bike. I put a small screw into the right-hand control housing to anchor the lock into place.

Yes, I considered that too and maybe the option as I need to replace cables and tube on the 06. I've been using the MADCO lock since 2006 and love it but it finally died and MADCO no longer produces it.

What's the real difference between the 2 Kaoko's?

I've always used the Brakeaway Units in my previous bikes as application of the Front Brake trips the latch mechanism and released the throttle. The FJR's bars are not threaded. That's why with applications like the Throttle Meister, we get a tool to remove the rubber insert and then install another type of friction based anchor.

Well.... When I installed the MADCO I trimmed the throttle tube end equal distance as MADCO width for a nice look. Heated grips have wires out the bottom? Seems that if the wires clear the switch housing they would also clear the MADCO body?

Don't know about the heated grips thing John but I have a Brake-Away on my bike and find it to be very finicky temperature-wise. See, there's an extra attachment that has to be used on the FJR and it really complicates the installation and adjustment. I can get it to work either above 85*F or below 80*F but not both. No matter how I tweak and cuss IMO it just can't be done. So I set it for cold temps when I'm wearing bulkier gloves and adding a Kaoko for other times. Everything works fine for me that way.

I'll be watching for your installation report with photos on the '13. If you are successful I'll purchase and install on the Grey Ghost while picking fuzz from my navel at Daytona in March before the unwashed hordes arrive. I know I'll want this coming across Texas on the way home, 80 is not fast enough :)
