NO ......they have invated the big yamie engine ................tHE TICK mice . Yes its a 2005 with 14000 miles and its a ticking and using oil. With only 3400 miles on the rotella synthetic the oil light went off needed 8 oz. Not sure if 8oz. is normal usage being i needed to add oil last change also . Will be talking to my dealer in september to let hime do some research first and then will bring it in october to do the work .

Sorry to hear that you have a ticker. Keep us posted. I think I'm past the mileage where most tickers emerge, but you never know.

Join the club. Mine's ticking too. Started to hear it at 11k, 13k its getting louder.

05 seem to be on the right side. Not using any oil.

Bike still runs strong. I'll see what dealer has to say, after it gets really loud.

yes its the right side . And i agree it was very faint 2k ago but was not sure if it was the tickie thing .At 14k there is no way its not the tick

unusual that it's the right side - most all have been on #1 or #2 cylinders, which is on the left

Mine was on #1 and really started getting noisy at about 14k. Mine never burned oil either, mostly noisy and down on power.

Fixed at 18.5k and running strong and silent now at 31.1k

Sorry to hear about your ticker.

My '05 started ticking at around 9000. I let it go until 15000 before getting it fixed. I didn't want to be out of a bike until winter months.

Now 8000 mile since repair and purring along smooth and quiet.

If you are still under warranty, keep riding until you can give up the bike for a few weeks. They took a little over 4 weeks to get mine squared away.

Tim

Hm...don't want to break out anything "offensive", but...maybe it's your oil, eh?

Nope, that ain't it. The guy who puts the valves in wrong was moved to the other side of the assembly line for 2005.

What kind of money are we talking to fix the ticker...assuming you dont have the warranty.
As far as I know, Yamaha is fixing all tickers whether they are still in warranty or not. The key is to deal with a dealer knowledgeable in "the tick".

IIRC there was an update to the valvetrain in '05 (valve seals?) for tickers getting fixed. Does anyone know off hand if these are the same seals being used in the '06?

Update to the valve seals was for the 06 model FJRs only. (And for any ticker repairs since approximately the beginning of 06) That is why everyone is watching so closely to see if any of the 06 FJRs tick.

Had my 05 ticker fixed late in 2005 and got the revised seals. Earlier in the year Yamaha was replacing the entire head assy and sending the old ones back to Japan for study. The folks who got the new head didn't get the new seals.
