I just got a 2K5 Fjr with 10,500 miles on it is there any way to tell if Yamaha has fixed the Tick without tearing the cylinde head off? The lady I bpought it from husband passed away and she really doesn't know what has been done to the bike.

Any dealer can run the VIN and tell you what recall items have been fixed, what needs to be fixed and also tell you if it is a repaired ticker. If it has not had the Tick Fix, I really wouldn't worry about it being a ticker, the odds are very low and it is an 'issue', not a problem.

They can't simply tell by pulling the heads, they would have to inspect the valve stem seals to know if it has old or new seals. Even if the head has old seals the vast majority of the old seals do not cause ticking. The way to tell if it is currently ticking (besides listening) is to pull the exhaust header and look for traces of oil. If there is no oil it is not currently a ticker, but it is no guarantee that it won't become one.

To repeat: I really wouldn't worry about it being a ticker, the odds are very low and it is an 'issue', not a problem. :)
