Ticking sound after downshifting

When I downshift and let off the clutch, I hear this ticking sound, and it ticks as the rpms wind down to 3000 rpm range.

It sounds almost like you are snapping a rubber band to an empty coke can, or shaking an empty coke can with a ball bearing in it...

Is this normal? Do you guys notice similar sound on downshift?

I have an 06 and there is deceleration poping, if the rpm's are high enough. Its not loud, but the sound comes from the pipes. Makes a noise similar to what you have described.

I've had a 2004 and a 2008 model FJR...neither has made that sound. I'd have it checked out.

I just rode without earplugs and helmet, and actually it seems like the popping from exhaust. Is there supposed to be a compound between the joint in the exhaust system in front of canisters? I see the clamp that attaches the pipe to the canisters right by the center-stand.

There is a decel sound when the engine is still cold, but it shouldnt have that sound after its warmed up to normal operating temps...and I wouldnt classify it sounding the way you first posted. Hope that is all it is. Good luck.

I thought I read somewhere around here that the popping sound was due to the unburned rich fuel on start up burning in the cat or pipes on decel. anyways...I like the sound. :lol:

I think it is intentional, meant to burn off the excess hydrocarbons and keep the air clean. That's why we have all that PAIR plumbing under the tank.

(Translation: If there's a ball bearing in your coke can, it isn't empty. If you remove the ball bearing, the can will be empty, and being empty, the can will be quiet.)

So what if you get decel popping after you've blocked off the air injection system? I'm getting it with my Holeshot header + Remus Hexacones. I don't have any exhaust leaks where the header mounts to the engine.

Is it possible that my modded air box and exhaust is now free-flowing enough that enough fresh air is pulled through to the exhaust ports during the exhaust/intake valve overlap? Or maybe the ceramic coating on my header is keeping the exhaust hot enough to ignite unburned fuel when it meets fresh air in the muffler?

I'll double check my capped-off air injection ports, but I'm pretty sure those are completely sealed.
