Does a new tire incur any internal damage when the beads are pressed/pinched together during installation? The tread and sidewall areas are fairly stiff but they will deform/pucker a bit when the beads are pressed together. Getting the beads together into the smaller radius portion of the wheel certainly makes it easier/possible to install the top bead.

I'm referring only to using one's hands to pinch together the beads and then holding them in position with inch wide straps while installing the top bead. It would seem unlikely that one could damage the tire's internals with only his gloved hands.

I dont think your hands are going to hurt a new tire. Unless of course you are one of those guys that can rip a phonebook in half.

Beads have steel rope...
+1 There's no way you're going to damage the beads, even if you could tear a phone book in half. I've put quite a bit of stress on the beads doing numerous tire changes and have never damaged a bead, and that includes breaking a couple tire irons.

Agreed. One got loose inside a tire I'd pulled off, picked the tire up holding it on the bead and spun it on my fingers as I was carrying it. Now THAT gets your attention. Imagine a dirty rough razor blade sliding along your hand. Damn did that suck--yes I bled a lot...

If that rubber hoop can stand the gross weight of the bike while coupling over 100HP to the road I'm thinking it's pretty damn robust.

Although it's definitely possible to damage the bead's sealing surface if you're careless with the mounting spoons.

I use clamps to squeeze the opposite side's bead into the rim well without damage.
