I picked up a small nail or something in the rear tire today. Could see the head of it when I noticed, and the tire pressuse was good (44lb hot) and the leak was very slow so I rode the 40 mile home. Now the head of the nail is more than an eight of an inch below the surface and I can't get a hold of it.

The tire is an Avon with 3 to 5 k miles left on it.

I'll have to remove the tire from the rim to get the nail out and am wondering what type of patch to use, or should I plug it anyway?

The hole is within 3/4" of the center of the tire.

Thanks, Jim

I would think that a rubber patch, rubber cemented to a roughed-up inner tire surface would hold just fine.

You can R&R a tire yourself? That would make life a whole lot easier. I've always struggled with plugs, trying to find a shop that will pull a tire, look the other way while I patch it, then remount it, or just biting the bullet and buying a new tire to replace one that still has some good life left.
