Ok as some of you may have read in my tank slapper thread I need tires. I have a question on wear. On average with a quality tire such as a PR2 riding the bike like a FJR1300 should be ridden. How many miles are we getting out of a set?

I got 14k on my front PR2, probably coulda got a couple thou more, but the tread was gettin' kinda thin. The rear is still going strong at 23k... looks like another 12-15k on it at least.

It's so hard not to ask this question, isn't it? Even though there are so many variables which affect the answer, we always want to know if we're "in the ballpark".

I have a 70+ year old friend who rides an ST1300 and says its his all-time favorite, fun bike - but he hates that it's so hard on tires! He's tried nearly every available tire (he's on his ninth set in just over 40,000 miles) and only once has he gotten more than 5k miles.

Is it the tires, the bike, or a... Mature man who probably wouldn't have a license (due to spending so much time conversing with Smokey) if he wasn't retired CHP.

Put on the PR2s and replace them when they're worn out - no matter the distance you travel.

Like the old saying regarding restaurant prices, "if you have to ask, you can't afford it."

4200 twisty roads

6000 slab

since 2002 been about the same

Im only asking because I have the records of when the previous owner had them installed and im just curious how this set did

Why does it matter? When they wear out we replace them. If they didn't last long enough we search for something less sticky and more harder. (much restraint shown now....)

Buy a tire you like and use it till it wears out. Some peeps get 6k miles and some get 16k miles on the same tire.

Last two PR2 fronts lasted 14,000 each. Michelin car on the rear has 27,000 and, while not looking like a new tire, still has more tread on it than a brand new PR2 does!

I replace mine as needed. Typically this is every 3000 miles but I ride 90% in the canyons at "fun speeds"

I typically go through 4-5 sets of tires (PR2, accept not substitute) per season.

Here's a typical ride in Colorado:

Don't know HOW you get so many miles out of a rear tire......I've never got more than 5,000 miles out of ANY rear tire on ANY bike I've ever owned.

Usually I get about 4,000 out of a sport touring tire, if it's a more sticky sport tire I get about 2,500.

Well, it matters to me because I've got a 4000 mile trip coming up in June. I bought the bike March 2nd, and I've put 1500 miles on it. Doing the math, it appears that if I keep this up I may not have enough tire left by then to make the trip.

So, I either:

  1. ride the wheels off the thing and replace the tires before the trip, or
  2. I park it and ride the ZRX 'til then.
I think I like option one better ;)

But your point is well taken. YMMV

Hi Old Guy.......it's Jerry from the ZRX board!

Why not just ride it till you need a new tire? Should be plenty of cycle shops where you can stop get some lunch and have 'em put on a tire....unless you'll be in the boonies most of the time?

Take note of location and "darksider" on his sig line...Run a Michelin CAR TIRE and you to can get that kind of mileage...

YMMV...Really!

Also, the type of road you ride makes a difference on tire wear, rougher rain grooved roads really take their toll.

California is big on rain grooves in the highways.

Only comment I'll make regarding the car tire is NO, I won't run one!

Well, for one reason, I hate losing the time, and it may be hard to find a shop that's got what I want. But the main reason is price. I buy my tires at a friendly local shop that treats me right, and I mount them myself. The last time I had tires mounted at a shop, it cost me $200 more than buying and mounting them myself.

I've got a spare rear wheel for my other two bikes. I need to look into that for the FJR.
