My son rode his 695 Monster at Star Motorcycle school at Louden International motor speedway last August for two days. They had everyone running lower than normal tire pressure. The tires only have 2000 miles on them and they almost don't look like they have any were at all. But they did get either blistering or maybe rubber from the track stuck to them, I'm not sure witch. Either way, no doubt, they got very hot that day. Most of the stuff wore of fairly soon after riding on the street again but some still remains on the tires. They may only have 200 or so miles on the tire since then.

Dose any one think the safety of these tires was compromised from the excessive heat that day? I wonder if the rubber is harder now caused by the high heat they endured? I don't want to toss away good money taking off good low milage tires but I also don't wont my son on unsafe tires.

Maybe a set of new PR2s is a good idea for him to start of this riding season.

Any thoughts from people experience with track day riding or racing would be appreciated.

What kind of tires?

Was that the first school/track day?

How many sessions did he run?

Most likely, he'll be fine.

it is normal to run low pressure at the track day. Generally it is somewhere around 30 I think. And yes they do get blisters, depending on the speed. Depending how many heat cycles they were subjected to they might be compromised in their grip. But as long as he is not pushing on the street he most liekly be fine.

They are the stock tires on a 08 monster. I'll have to look at them when I get home tonight to see what kind they are.

The track day was the fourth riding course last year but the first three were low speed in parking lots. I did the first three on the FJR with him, but chickened out on the Track days for the FJR.

On the track day his tires were cycled from cool to hot almost every 20 minutes from 9 to 5 for two days in a row. And he hit about 100MPH on the end of the main strait every time around the track. And good speeds on the rest of the course also. I also just noticed what may be a small nail in the rear tire yesterday, but its not loosing air.

I though they might have some rubber stuck on them from the track wile they got really hot. Now that you guys told me its blistering from the hight heat, I think I should get him new tires. I don't want him to have any loss of traction due to the high heat they endured on the track.

I'll get back in here in a few hours after I see what brand tires he has.

Thanks, Mike

that's a heckuva lotta heat cycles. and since we're talking about street tires Bridgestone BT56 perhaps) and, most likely, not designed as a race/track compound tire, i would replace them. following race/track day abuse, tire life is not determined exclusively by remaining tread.

Thanks for the advice,

I"ll get him a set of PR2. I just put a set my FJR, my stock tires had about 5,750 on them and I wanted a fresh start for the season.

You should definitely pull whatever it is that looks like a "nail" out and see how far it has penetrated. That is of more concern than the crud on the outer tread IMO (but I'm not a track-boy so what do I know?)

Besides, everyone know Ducatis handle like they are on rails no matter whatkind of tires they have on them... ;)

My son went back and fourth between the track and class room every 20 minutes all day two days in a row. So he must have had about ten twenty minute sessions on the track each day running between 60 MPH and 100 MPH. All the bikes that day had blistered tires. His got a lot better after some time back on the street.

I will take it to a bike shop to get the tires replaced with PR2s.

But I cant take it to the dealer where we bought it. I have to take it in my pickup to a Ducati dealer two hours away in Northampton Massachusetts. Our dealer is regularly booked eight to ten weeks in advanced and will not even take your bike for and oil change with out waiting the eight to ten weeks for the next available appointment.

Last year a few days after paying them 8,000.00 for the bike they would not do the 600 mile service for ten weeks. Thats when I canceled my purchase of a BM1200GS and got the 07 FJR1300 instead :thumbsupsmiley:

I was in the process of purchasing the BMW from them when the servicing issue came up. They still would not budge on doing my Ducati 600 mile service when I told them I cant by the BMW if they cant service it or my Ducati for ten weeks. That did not faze them a bit. I also told them I never would have bought the Ducati from them if the told me no service for ten weeks before I bought it. They are already booked nine weeks out now. Needless to say, we stopped doing any business with them.

For his monster the PR2s would compromise grip. With the lighter weight bike, the Pilot Power would be the "equivalent" type tire for his bike.

I would second this notion. Monster would be really happy on the PW, just do not get dual compound in PW. Unless he will be riding track on them it makes no sense. One of the mags did a report on them last year.

After a track day with the FJR

I read a review that said the PWs are great on the track or smooth road but it said they are squirrelie on less than smooth roads. And that they will be toast in about 2000 miles. Any one here have experiance with the Michelin Pilot Powers?

Or how about the Pilot Power 2CT duel compound tires?
