Just putting new tires on my 08 fjr just woundering what is the best for longivety and grip thanks

It's a somewhat subjective perception , I've had good luck with both Avon's and Metzelers . You might want to check the Avon Storm 2 Ultra and the Metzeler Roadtec Z6 interact ( not to be confused with the standard)

Michelin Pilot Roads 2 (PR2's) are another popular favorite and my sneaker of choice.

You might do better searching for Pilot Road 2's. ;) In fact, no sense searching. Just go to DerbyCycles.net for the best prices available (no affiliation. Yada, yada...).

I'm putting my first set of the PR2's on any day now (whenever I get off my lazy butt to mount them).

My last two sets of tires have been Dunlop Roadsmart rear coupled with Pirelli Diablo Strada up front. That was a very good handling combo, and I'd continue to use them if I could still get the Pirelli's. Their Strada model has been discontinued for the Angels. Prior to that were 2 sets of matched Diablos.

The rears (both Roadsmart and Diablo) have been lasting me around 8k miles and the Diablo fronts ~ 10k miles. Of course mileage varies a lot by individual circumstances. That is with combined 1-up and 2-up recreational touring (non-commuting) use. Mostly Northeast secondary roads. Seldom take the slab anywhere. YMMV

Here's the problem with that: Many (most?) of those old NEPRT posts don't even apply any more. Many were made before the advent of the current crop of ST tires. Many of the old tires (preferred or otherwise) aren't even available any more. Prices have changed radically over just the last year. PR2's use to cost a big premium. Now they are priced about the same as others.

I don't see the big deal about bringing this topic up for an update every now and then. Yeah I know it can get old. So don't read the threads that have the word "Tires" in them.

Ob smilie---> :D

Since we're on the subject, are there any members running the new Bridgestone BT023 GT specs? I'm not thrilled with my curent set of Roadsmarts. They handle well in the beginning but are developing a very angular wear pattern. I am mostly 2 up, secondary roads. The OE BT021s lasted 7000 miles, but the front really chopped as time went on.

Haulinashe?????

+1 on the PR2. I ran the PR1 before and liked the handling. The PR2 has (IMHO) held up very well and the handling hasn't gone away on them yet. I am at about 10K on this set. I predict I will get 30% more miles out of this set than the PR1 or crappy Metzlers that came with the bike. I'll be putting PR2s on again when I have wrung these out.

I know some others on this forum have not been happy with the PR2 (paging Warchild), but I think they would also admit that what may work for them, their style of riding, and in their neck of the woods may or may not apply to you. So best bet - read all the opinions and then make your best guess based on your situation. The acronym YMMV (You Mileage May Vary) really does apply here.

Best of luck! :good:

Oohh, a tire thread that's not in NEPRT! If I hurry I can add a reply that ups my post count!

I prefer tires that are black and hold air. Works for me. :yahoo:

I got 10K miles from the factory Metzler Z6s. I put on a set of PR2s a few weeks ago and the difference is AMAZING!! Super light turn in, line holding is MUCH better.

It totally changed the character of the bike from slightly piggish to almost svelte.

The trick there is to never run the front Roadsmart along with the rear.

They (the fronts) are pretty much universally abhorred for their crappy wear pattern.

O.K. My two bits worth. I've run the original Bridgestones, Perelli Diablo stradas, standard and E, Avons, and now PR2's. The only front tire that didn't cup and start to handle like shit was the perelli. I've got the PR2's on now with 6k on them and when they wear out, don't think I will buy another set, even though I probably will get the longest mileage from them. Probably try the Angels. Maybe even the DARKSIDE. Tires should last longer, and wear truer.

+1 on the PR2 (front at least)... replaced the front with PR2 about a month ago and very happy.. Also had good service/pricing from derbycycles.net

Throwing my penny into the pot. On the forums recommendation I went with the PPR2. derby shipped fast. Cost to put them on and balance was $150 (thought a little steep). Noticed that the stock Metzlers were steel belted and the PPRs not. Slightly discomforting but what the heck. Got 7100k out of the Mets. New tires radically changed the way the bike handled. Comfortably and confidently taking turns at 60 that were sketchy at 50 on the used metzlers. Front met cupped, now much less vibration at the handlebars. I'm ATGAT to give you an idea about me. Never 2 up, mostly back country roads with lots of deer. I like the PPRs lots but hope they last until the bike sells.

After much contemplation, I just ordered a set of Bridgestone BT023 GT Spec's to replace my worn out Pilot Road (not 2). I really liked how the 021's handled until the front went crazy at the end. Bridgestone has supposedly "listened to the criticism" so we'll see..

Should be here on July 1. $240/shipped...

Just had PR2's put on last week (bought off Derby Cycles, mounted by a local shop for $100 and I let them take them off the bike and put 'em back on). They replaced OEM Metz's. As stated above, it's like a whole new bike! Granted, both front and rear of the old tires were flatted in the center, so likely any new tire would feel better, but I'm really liking the grip and feel of these. We'll see how long they last.
