To WFO from Denver area, leaving 7-25-07

Hey,Anybody want to hook up and do the ride to Park City together? I'm in Boulder, CO plan to ride via RMNP, Hot Sulfur Springs, Toponas, Craig, Meeker, Rangely, Dinosaur, but can only figure US 40 in Utah. Does anybody have a route suggestion for Dinosaur to Park City?

After the WFO, 7-29-07 I'm riding to Yellowstone, Helena MT, Missoula, Glacier/Waterton NP., back to Boulder. 2 weeks on the road.

I'm from Park City and will be at WFO event when you all arrive(won't be staying at the Marriott as I live in a house here). When you get on US 40 in Utah you will drive through Duchesne. State road 87 intersects US 40 in Duchesne. Take SR87 (north) until it intersects State Road 35, then take SR35 (east). This is Wolf Creek pass and it is a wonderful ride, right through the Uintas. You will eventually arrive in Francis Utah. Take State Road 32 from Francis until it intersects US 40, (around the back side of Jordanelle reservoir). Turn right and you'll be about 10 miles from the Park City exit off US40. It's a terrific ride if you've the mind, (and butt) after coming all the way from Denver that day.

I am coming in the same way as Jeff is , on hwy 40 . I have traveled that road a couple of times already so I am always looking for a different route. In looking at my map it shows hwy 35 as being partially gravel .. Is it now hard surface all the way now, It looks interesting and I will take it but only if it is hard surface.

Well lets start talking about starting times and a meeting place. I just talked to Bob Vail out of Thornton. He and his brother will be riding on Thursday the 26th and would like to get started early (6 to 7 am). I am ok with that.

We have about 540 miles to do and get in town in time for some brews.

The route I was thinking was I-70 to Colorado Exit 15. North on 139 to 64 to Hwy 40 . . . then take Mac's suggestion above to ride into Park City with a view. Once we get off of I-70 all the Hwy in Colorado is labeled as scenic Hwy and our trip to Wolf Creek Pass sounds like a good one also.

I know many have done I-70 through Colorado, but I would still say that Vail Pass and Glenwood Canyon are not that bad of a view and we have some miles to cover to get in at a respectable time.

I am not saying that we have to go this route, I am just putting a suggestion on the table to continue this thread.

We have 2 riders from Thornton, 2 from Broomfield and 2 from Boulder so far. The gentleman coming in from Missouri and I think there might have been another from a post a couple of months ago, that I will try to contact.

So we can meet either up north or down on I-70 somewhere . . . . . let me know what you guys are thinking.

I am definitely making this a day ride and we are looking at 500+ miles at the minimum. That's a good 10 hour run on the slab, so maybe more taking the side roads. But I think that I-70/US40 is the most direct path.

We could either meet at Cracker Barrel on 120th/I-25 or a place of your choosing. Either go down I-25/I-76/I-70 or maybe CO128 to Indiana and shoot straight down to I-70.

My brother will be coming to town the preceding Friday and we will most likely be doing some riding during the weekend and also during the week, so he can get aquainted with the FJR. Might be a good time to get to know everyone. Maybe we could get together over at my house for some sparkling adult beverages on the weekend. I live right across the '25' from you.

p.s. Most poopooh the I-70, but there is some real eye-popping scenery out towards Green River. We won't be going that way, but I'd bet the scenery will be nice on US40 also.

Hi Jeff, I am riding in from Iowa and will be laying over in Greeley on the 24th and then on the 25th I will be taking exactly the same route as you are. I plan on laying over in Vernal , Utah that night and will go to Park City the following day .
I don't normally ride with anyone as I like to ride at my own pace and stop and take pictures when I want to. So if you see an 07 with Iowa plates stop and say hi.

I will overnite in Steamboat or nearby strawberry park hot springs. Too hot in Vernal this time of year, so I'll stay in the high country, and a soak in the hot springs will feel real good. Why did you choose Vernal? Its pretty hot and bleak there. Pull up early and stay in the 'Boat. Its a lot like Park City. I'll be riding a black cherry 2007.

Also, I am going to skip RMNP as weekday construction has up to one hour delays. I'll go over Berthoud Pass on US 40 instead.

If you are coming from Greeley, consider going Hwy 14 through Walden and catch us 40 at muddy pass. Very beautiful ride!

I just picked Vernal as it was closer to Park City, have stayed there before and I know it is hot but an air conditioned motel makes life easier. Now that you have mentioned the problem going over RMNP you have changed my mind also. I think I will take 14 thru Walden. I know that area well as I have laid over at Walden 4 or 5 times. Sounds good about meeting up at Muddy Pass, would enjoy riding along with someone else, and then staying overnight in the high country would be nice. Let me know your time frame and I will see if I can work it out.

In giving it some more thought I think I had better go back with my orgional idea . I have to stop in Loveland to see some friends of my wife's and I don't have any idea of a time frame of when I can get out of there so I had better just go it alone. I would hate the thought of someone waiting for me and me being way late.

We are up to 8 riders now!

2 - Broomfield, 2 - Thornton, 1 - Springfield, 3 - Okalahoma

The Broomfield/Thornton group can meet at Cracker Barrel at 120th and I-25. Then we can proceed to meet at Petey's hotel along I-70 near WheatRidge on our way out of town if that is ok with everyone. He is going to let us know where once he gets it booked.

It is starting to come togethere.

That sounds interesting. Since you are the expert, how would you compare the travel time on 35 to that portion of 40?

Also, how is 40 as a highway? Not a 4 lane mini-slab, I would guess?

Whatever route we decide on must be by (near) consensus.

I would think about 20 minute difference is all at the worst.

Fastest route from Dushneggy to PCity (according to Garmin Mappoint)

87.1 Miles 1Hr 28 Minutes

Diversion

88.1 Miles and about 20 minutes more due to nice twisties, Garmin sed 1 Hr more but that is not even close! It is mapping at 35mph due to road size

Another benefit. Get up in Altitude, outta the heat for a few, Dushneggy and 40 can be 100 degrees, Crossing Hwy 35 can be 78 deg same day.

You will see where stopped mapping in Francis Utah. From there it is goto Hwy 248 in Kamas (bout ummm 3 miles north)

Follow that right to within 5 blocks or so of the hotel

Does anyone know anything about Hwy 139 and 64 in Colorado as you head north from Exit 15? Jeff seem to think this road is not in the best shape (although he did say that was a year or so ago) I picked it because the atlas says it is scenic.

I didn't see one at I-70 and 121 (Wadsworth Blvd), but there is one at the next EXIT WEST That must be the one you are referring to. It is in the vicinity of Kipling. I think you get off at Denver West, but you would need to confirm that with Holiday Inn. It's just a normal neighborhood and from the description, has a medium sized mall (Colorado Mills) right across the street. You're not going to be in the 'hood'.
