Healthy 41 year old with 20 yrs long distance riding, just finished a 10,000 km ride Toronto to Vegas via the deep south and back. On 10 riding days typically about 600 miles a day. Wicked "Cramp" in calf during the last few days. Didn't get better in a few days. Saw doctor. Major blood clot behind left knee. Potentially fatal. Drug routine for a couple months, daily blood testing etc. etc. Really glad Canadian health care is free to all, as I am suddenly using the system a lot. (no waiting lists or delays so far).

Permenant impairment of blood flow in vein, so high chance or reoccurance given same conditions, so no more long rides.

Before it happens to you, ride less, walk around more, wear compression stockings and take a blood thining asprin.

Wow. I'm really sorry to hear about all this. I guess you'll just have to get an MV Augusta F4 Senna. Not too comfortable at all...but sure is fun in spurts!

yet another reason to work up a stretching routine to use while riding. repeat it every 20 to 30 minutes throughout the ride.

Good advice. May I add a suggestion to stay well hydrated? Even if you partake of 'adult beverages' after the ride, chug down plenty of water too. It helps blood flow, and forces the rider to stop briefly, to get rid of the water.

Hey buddy you need to make changes in your life, like now..

Sounds like you could use a personal trainer to get you on the road to recovery.

And did I mention get up ut of that recliner

Hope you do not quit, that would be a big mistake.

Sorry to hear about the cramp and blood clout. Are you giving up motorcycling altogether or just LD bikes that bend the knee past 90 degrees? I have highway pegs on the FJR, but that barely straightens the legs past 90 - at least where mine are located.

Have you considered a cruiser bike with forward controls? My Honda VTX allows a regular riding position with legs straighter than when on the FJR highway pegs. Putting highway pegs on a cruiser can allow you to completely stretch out your legs. Granted, it is not my preferred option for long distance riding, but there are plenty of guys who do Iron Butt events on cruisers. I completed one in June with a guy on a Vulcan, one on a Road Star and one on a Yamaha 400 -oops that guy gets a special award.
