Tools to take

As some of you might know, I'm flying down and buying an FJR in FL and riding it back to NH.

Since I'd like to be as prepared as possible, what are some of the tools I should bring that aren't included in the OEM tool kit?

What removes the front axle? 19mm Allen?

Any other major tools I should consider?

In addition to better screwdrivers, pliers and such, I'm bringing a patch kit as well as better Allen wrenches...anything else?

Any large sockets?

Yep, that is the size.

I cannot remember the size of the rear axle socket.

Also, cable ties, duct tape...

Sticky string tire repair kit and a cheapie compressor. The guts of a WalMart 10-dollar compressor will pack under the pillion.

Front axle tool can be "manufactured" like this from a spark plug socket and a 3-inch extension.

Rear axle is handled by the foldable spark-plug thingie in the tool kit, it's 14mm.

Just to add to Wfooshee's comments..............

I am sure there are others who have figured this one out.....................the folding spark plug wrench fits 4 items (perhaps more).

1. The spark plugs.....duh.

2. The rear axle socket (14mm) as mentioned.

3. The front axle socket (19mm) YES IT'S TRUE!!

4. Any 10mm bolt on the bike

The larger part of the wrench just needed a bit of grinding on the outside to allow a nice fit into the front axle. There is no concern about "thinning" the socket too much, as I mentioned, it just needed a small amount of grinding. I just use the screwdriver in the kit for extra leverage on the socket wrench. Works for me.....

Make absolutely sure that the steering head nut is torqued properly before you leave the dealership. Mine wasn't and when I told the dealer later, he said that the factory should have done that. It's a 36mm and it may only come with a 1/2" drive. You're going to be hating replacing the steering head bearings as soon as you get home because that thing was clunking on the trip.

What are you doing for oil changes? That would be my only concern. I'd think you'd want to change it at least once on your way unless the bike isn't new.

About 4200 miles on the bike. I was thinking of one oil change somewhere along the trip.

So generally speaking, it sounds like my "Extended Ride" tool kit will do the job.

Don't forget a flashlight of some kind, even if you only ride during the day. I either have my headlamp (keeps the hands free) or at least a penlight. You never know when you're going to have to do a repair in the dark. And, it helps to have a light in the daytime instead of blind feeling around a fairing and bellypan for a dropped key....trust me I know. (Oh, and wait until the engine is cooled off!...ouch!)

Also how easy is it to get to the battery with the tools I've listed? I wanna hook up some power for my gloves before I embark on my return to NH. I have a feeling the night riding will be considerably colder as I work my way north...

Okay...got the battery question figured out...The answer--> "It's a *****."

So who wants to venture a guess on the 1pc fitting inside one of the sidebags? Possible?

I'd guess it's possible since I can get a full 1 piece 'Stitch in mine.
