I ordered goods from an ebay seller which after paying on a 'buy it now' auction turned out to be different to what was advertised. The goods cost £295.

I pointed out to the seller that I wasnt happy, he back-pedaled and hit the refund button within half an hour of payment.

Paypal tell me that it will then take a week to 10 working days to put the money back into my account, from whence it came the instant I hit the 'confirm payment' button.

I sent a couple of emails complaining, to no avail. 8 Days have elapsed, the money has been released by paypal, to the extent that they have 'sent' word to my bank and await a response before they can deposit it, which may take upto a further 10 F****N' days!!!!!

the money came out of my account instantly and was in mid air for no more than half an hour before the guy sent it back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you don't think they're in this for fun. do you? it's a business. one of the ways they make a profit is through the interest earned of "air borne" transfers. while in limbo they earn a little interest on each transaction.

of course there's there fee for business accounts too.

they could charge you a fee for each transaction or float your xfer. would one be more acceptable to you than the other?

let me get this straight - you are going to get your money back - but it's not happening fast enough for you - and you are complaining?
S.O.P. for most refunds..
I understand they have to turn a coin from the deal, but why tell me lies why not just say we sit on your money to make our share?

In my experience electronic transfers take about as long as it takes the screen to change after you hit the 'enter' key.

They are making out its taking nearly 3 weeks, when the payment was refunded within half an hour.

Would you be annoyed? I think so. Dont forget that initially I was miss-sold goods to get into this. I know thats not pay-pals fault, but they are taking advantage.

I could have sent the guy a cheque, let him bank it, have it clear and have him post me a refund cheque in less time.

It's pretty clear that when things go less-than-normal with PayPal the service sucks and I wish they were more accountable. Alternatively, who's going to build a better mousetrap and beat them? Sounds like a perfect business opportunity for whoever doesn't like the service and you could get rich.

I have not had this issue with paypal but an alternative for future reference would be to have the individual not make a refund but to make a payment.

My personal complaint has nothing to do with the speed but the fees charged especially the exchange rates.

The same sort of thing is true of any credit card purchases. The charge is credited to your accound almost instantly but it will often take 10 days or so to get a refund or credit applied. If it happens over the billing cycle you still need to pay. Not what you would want but what you get (and agree to - read the fine print) when you use those services. Doesn't necessarily make it right but that is just the deal. Get over it.

my wife sold an expensive Halloween costume on ebay. We followed ALL procedures and shipped to a confirmed address. 2 months later Paypal takes the money out of our account because the person said it was a fraudulent charge. The did not deny they got the costume. So they got the goods and the money back. Seller protection - right  . Some people will work it, and in your case the people working it are the owners, so what you gonna do? We quit using them for a while, but they have the market cornered.

here is my paypal tale of woe

I sold a laptop on ebay person did a buy it now about 6pm in the evening. money went into paypal account, received a message from paypal that it was ok to ship that money is in the account.

told paypal to transfer money to my checking account.

checked before I went to bed that night and no new email

checked again the next morning and no new email

came home at lunch picked up laptop to mail. again checked email and nothing new

went back to work and shipped laptop

got home from work that night and new email from paypal said do not ship. money is under investigation. believe it was ill gotten.

sent paypal email and ask what the hell are you talking about. you sent mail and said ok to ship. and now that I have shipped you now say do not ship and have taken the money back from my account

4 weeks go by and paypal says we have terminated the account of the person that sent the money and the money has been returned to the person it was taken from.

so I have no money and no laptop

ebay charge to sell a laptop that I never got paid for.

lawyer and state attorney general could not get a living person at paypal to speak with

6 months later it is all done and I received nothing.

payed ebay to sell laptop I never received payment

paid shipping cost to ship laptop

seems doing business with paypal cost more than I can afford.

I am surprised there isn't a credit card network expert to chime in here. I am not one, but have spoken quite a few times to them. There is a problem with the network and often it really can take some time to confirm funds have been transferred. When it is a refund, PayPal becomes responsible to pay you, but they will not unless the monies have gone through two steps:

1) arrived

2) been confirmed

My experience showed that confirmations can take up to 3 days and vendors are recommended to wait 10 days defacto to ensure they aren't being wripped off. What can happen is that a credit is approved on a person's card and then when the confirmation is to take place the funds were near simultaneously claimed from another payee. All the sudden, money that showed in Paypal's account is gone and they would be out if they had paid you already.

In today's world, this seems archaic, but understand the current network is the same one implemented by IBM in the 70's. It has been added to, but not replaced with better technology and work flow.

I am sure someone will come along and tell you the truth, this is the best of my understanding, I figure I'm at least 21.73% right :)

I don't like Paypal so I don't use it. Simple enough for me. Since you are getting your money back, consider yourself lucky this time and don't use their services again.

You can play the same game with your credit cards if you are disciplined enough. Simply charge everything you buy, effectively using their money, and pay the account in full when it is due.

Bummer, N7. I can call you N7, can't I?

I *never* ship something without first having the payment cleared - as in moved from their storage to my real bank account (PayPal).

Would you hand the keys to a car over until the buyer's check cleared, their MO was accepted at the bank, or you had their cash in your hands?
