I have a 2002 6cyl 4.0 L Ford Ranger. It's a manual. Just wondering if I need to tow it in 4th instead of 5th gear. Gonna be a long haul, all highway (a little over a thousand hours).

I have an 08 Ranger 4x4 Automatic 4.0 and pull a 24ft travel trailer with it. I use the overdrive on the flats and let it drop out on the hills. You should have no trouble pulling the bike on a trailer.

Damn! A thousand hours???? Either really far or you're goin' really slow!

Seriously, you'll probably end up in 4th a lot. In general, try to keep the engine around it's torque peak when pulling a big load. Torque peak for most non-high performance engines is usually around 3000 RPMish

You should only really be concerned with OD in an auto tranny. If you have a manual just shift when you you need to. With the auto in OD under load, depending on the terrain, it could be shifting constantly and that is not good for it.

I have a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L inline 6cyl with auto OD, that currently has nearly 192K miles on it. A couple years ago, we pulled a loaded 4X6 foot U-Haul from northern Cali to Las Vegas for my sister in law. Same year we towed a 17ft pop up tent trailer from home to near Pioneer/Jackson California and back. This past summer we towed another pop up tent trailer from home to the Redwoods parks on the coast and back. Jeep never complained a bit on any of the pulls. Just made sure to get up a bit of speed before starting to climb a hill, and switched off the OD. Going downhill, downshifted to second to save on some brake fade. The hills going to camp near Pioneer were pretty big with some long pulls. We dropped speed to around 40 on most of them but it made it alright.

A few years back, I had a old 84 Ranger 4X4 with the POS 2.9L V6 4 spd manual. Thing was horrible for acceleration but damn could it pull. Lots of torque. I used it to haul a 19Ft boat, motor and trailer loaded with some household stuff from Shreveport LA to Dover DE. Total load weight was over 2700 lbs. Again, braking was my biggest concern. You chould be fine with your newer Ranger and the Feej behind it.
