Location
Sahuarita, AZ. Gave up on rainy Oregon
We just spent a week in the Jackson, Miss area, and, lucky me, I got stopped for doing 66 in a 50 on I-55 North. It was about 9 PM and there was traffic all around us, some faster, some slower and I had a rental with Wisconsin plates. I really thought the limit was 60 on this road. The guy came up behind me and turned on his pretty blue lights and it was very business like from that point. No discussion, no answer to my plea that other traffic was going faster, just give me your license and rental papers and shut up. I called the number on the citation today (no area code, guess they think their out of state primary customers will figure it out) and the gal said I could plead my case in front of the judge but otherwise SOL. So, I am soon to be $160 poorer and my cost of visiting my daughter at Millsaps College went up. Is this worth hasseling about and will any points migrate to my Oregon license?

:graduated: The high cost of having a child at the "Harvard of the south". The trooper probably keyed in on the Yankee tag. Used to be you couldn't run 60 on I-55. the trucks had rutted it too badly. I'm still trying to figure out how a NY trooper can pick me out doing 68 in a 55, when the cage traffic is going faster. I feel your pain.

Try this site www.ticketkiller.com The cost is $34 for their speeding ticket defense. They boast over 80% of speeding tickets are dismissed using their system. I have never used it but I have bookmarked the site for future use. Good luck.

I am sorry to hear this. Too many municipalities are struggling for revenue and they have resorted to this as their cash cow...it is a shame where the Letter of the Law trumps the Spririt of the Law.

Pending on how the state operates, it is a good possiblity that this state will not report your violation to the Oregon DMV or insurance company...just don't let it go to a warrant and this whole situation may change. This is also why they target out of staters since they can get the revenue without pissing off the locals...

Good Luck and hope your daughter does not have to pay for this!

Ralph,

Sorry to hear the bad news.

Mississippi and Oregon have a compact agreement, but only for situations where you fail to pay the ticket. If you do that, your Oregon driver's license will be suspended. Any "points" you accrue from that state can't transfer as we don't have a points system here.

As far as www.ticketkiller.com, like the cops don't know about this website and the many others like it. There isn't any info on that site that will help you in most cases.

Thanks for the empathy, guys! I will just close my eyes and write a check and fuhgeddaboutit. Need to be more vigilant and drive the limit plus 8 . Damn, that is just so hard to do when everyone is going 10 -20 over.

Just joined this site last night, and by the way, look at message #6 under "Nervous new member" for the conditions of the roads around Jackson. I live here and work for a company that has GPS on all their vans. I travel I-55 everyday and pray that I don't get killed from a rearend collision. Early mornings are the worst. I get fingered off, cursed, and only God knows what else on that stretch of the highway for only driving the limit. As you now know, it's simply a speed trap and a selective speed trap. Trust me pay the ticket and save yourself some grief.

The condition of the roads here dictate the speed limit more than the law. My son went to Millsaps as well, great college. Good luck on your decision and as well to your daughter. From a safety standpoint, ride with more caution around Jackson, there is a "what are you doing on my road, in my way," mentality here plus the condition of the roads demand it. Sorry for your misfortune, Jackson and Mississippi in general, has gone through a transition in the last 30 years. It's not for the better. The Hound

I really thought the limit was 60 on this road.
that's all the judge needs to know. speeding is speeding. everything else is just a matter of how costly. as with other things, you can't be a little bit pregnant.

BTW: +8 is still over and subject to citation. I've been pulled over for as little as +3. People claiming that anything under +8 is given a pass are surviving off the good nature of the roadside tax collectors. Anyone over the posted limit is subject to what kind of mood they're in that day. +1 and over will be based on the level of risk you're willing to take. As with performance sports, "how fast can you afford to go?"

Back in the early 80's, the state had a campaign, I got a ticket for +1, 56 in a 55 and my first radar detector. <_<
