sounds like Sparky's got a stand-up dealership.

That'll be a big relief. :)

I'm going with the "gopher" theory here. :dribble:
It use to be that bikes had to be uncratered (sometimes that

was a major hassle) and you never knew when you'd find

cracked fairings or bent billet, and then assembled ($$). But

my understanding (not 100% sure on this )

is that these days a lot of bikes are no longer shipped cratered

but rather pre-assembled, on a pallet, strapped down the same way those

companies that will ship your bike for one place to another.

This would appear how my bike arrived, as before I even inspected it, they told me that one of the tie down straps gouged a tiny hole in the right grip when they were removing it. (They of couse appologised for this and informed me a replacement grip was ordered)

They did insist that I carefully examine the bike and let them know if there were any other problems. Had the originator of this thread done so before taking off from the dealer with his bike, the matter likely would have been resolved without all this discussion ;)

Sparky, are the scratches through the clear coat and paint or just the clear coat. Is the plastic showing below the blue paint?

Update on my Paint Issues.

Let me preface my update by saying this; good dealerships will go out of there way to do the right thing. That is why choosing the right dealer for my FJR was a very important aspect of my purchase. And my primary reason for checking with the experts on this forum.

When I informed Sunnyside about the cosmetic issues I had with the bike, they didn't hesitate to let me know that they would do whatever they could to make things right. I can think of a couple of local dealerships that would likely have given me the run around. Thanks Sunnyside!

Yep, there are a few dealerships that will go the extra mile... luckily now that we have forums like this, it's a bit easier to find out which ones they are...

Dale - so, have you been test riding all the new 06 FJRs?
Unfortunately, when these first two FJRs came in, I was out on a 3-day Cal 24 bonus point validation ride.

However, I should be around for the rest of the Sunnyside deliveries.

Still, another forum member is taking delivery this upcoming weekend, so I'll be checking out her bike as well....

Well, I villified the dealer. Then again, they're the one that let it out the door without telling the customer about the problems. Sounds like a Quality Assurance policy needs to be revamped, or enforced. Good dealers can take constructive criticism right? At least we can talk about this and know we are talking to a dealer that truly does care.

Nobody should have to remind any FJR riders that Sunnyside has done great things for the FJR community. So I will anyway. Thanks for WFO Sunnyside, and much, much more!!!

I'm also glad to hear the owner has a good dealer for support. Too often we hear stories that go the other way.

Man, oh man...

This has been a great thread for me as now I don't feel so bad.

See, my 2006 FJR came in rather BADLY crate damaged. The box was not damaged in any way, nor was the bottom of the crate or any of the support members, yet the bike had damage and it really couldn't be blamed on the trucking company.

Left side of the fairing was scraped up, gouged, and scratched. Alternator cover was all scuffed up. Oil filter was CRUSHED !!! Glove box door had sizable scratches in it, the left hand grip was torn, and the left side handlebar switch assembly badly gouged.

Right side lower fairing was all scuffed, scratched, and gouged up, too.

I was PISSED !!!

But I still kept my cool because I could see my dealer was just as mortified as I was, and he was already on the phone to Yamaha. Oddly enough the Yamaha factory rep was right up the road 180 miles in Austin, and Yamaha sent him down to take a look at it. Even he was freaked out and embarassed, and made it clear Yamaha would take care of all of it.

I took the bike home anyway, and even rode it up in the Hill Country two days later and all weekend. While up there I noticed the left headlamp lens had numerous swirl scratches in it, too. But since I had rode it off I decided to simply polish them out when I got home. Turned out they were deeper than I thought and it took a lot of time and Novus to get it right.

Yamaha got all the parts here quick, and I have be reasonably happy with how the whole thing has been handled, but...

This is supposed to be Yamaha's premier sport touring mount... One of their flagship motorcycles... Yet here are a bunch of them apparently coming in pretty thrashed and trashed right from the factory. That's pretty mind-numbing. It is a pre-ordered, deposit-taken motorcycle, and Yamaha pretty much knows how many they are gonna' have to make, and they only have one color on each model to deal with...

But somehow or another they can't get all of 'em ot the customer undamaged???

That's pretty well unacceptable in my eyes.

The PDP is supposed to be the Preferred Delivery Program yet it seems more and more each day that there is nothing preferential about it...

Sorry for the rant... Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Actually, the PDP refers to the "Priority Delivery Program".

Regardless, you make a good point.... we're seeing an unusual amount of in-crate damage this year, compared to the previous four years.....

The right lower faring on my bike was damaged, it had a very insignificant scratch in the paint. The only real issue with it to me was I thought the body panels were blue clean through, I was wrong, they are gray underneath. I noted the damage when I took delivery, the dealer said Yamaha will replace the piece.

If I were you I would return the bike to the dealer and ask them to take pictures of each damaged panel. It's not unheard of for this type of damage to take place in shipping. (My scratched panel was directly underneath the yellow tape which held the protective wrap over the tank. Hopefully your dealer will work with you and report the damage to Yamaha. Unfortunately for you, it's pretty cut and dry when you take delivery of a new vehicle that you inspect the unit prior to actually taking delivery.

May still be worth trying though, good luck.

While I totally agree that this shouldn't happen AT ALL...not ever...I am curious as to how you came to the conclusion that "a bunch" of them have been damaged. Are there stories other than the two mentioned in this thread? Are others out there w/ new 06's at home right now trying to polish out scratches?

I certainly hope that these are very isolated incidents.

It seems that both dealerships involved here are doing the right thing, too...good on them for that.

Although the excitement takes hold like a frieghttrain It's storys like this that make you want to take the time!!! when I picked up my 05 my Wife, the salesman and especially the finance guy were furious at me for taking so much time looking it over!! Didn't pick up the pen until I was happy It beats the stress monster screaming inside your head! I'm sure they will make it better than right!!!

Coulda been a lot worse for all the scratched-in-crate owners. Some moron could maybe mighta pulled up to a stop sign and FALLEN OVER with the brand new bike, putting DEEP SCRATCHES down the right side. Of the bike. With his wife on the back. Into gravel. With 500 miles on the bike. Some ***** coulda done THAT. That'd BUM the new owner, now wouldn't it? The day before getting the new sliders he'd ordered? See, it coulda been a lot worse for all the scratched-in-crate owners.

"Uh, hello, Color-Rite? Do you have a paint code for the 2006 Yamaha FJR1300? Uh, yeah, I know they just came out. I was just, uh, wondering? Oh, a week or so? Okay, thanks."

If the moron was lucky, he'd know some guys make low riders, do the most fabulous paintwork around. Maybe he could tell the guys his WIFE knocked the bike over in the driveway!! That's IT!!! :yahoo:

Why do I have this feeling that it was a *good* thing that Warchild was out of town last week when my FJR came in to Sunnyside
