Don't be afraid of the bus service in the city, either. There is so much cool architecture and so many sights that I enjoyed taking one last month from BART to the hotel I stayed at in the wharf area.

At least one evening when I visit, I'll take a long walk from Fisherman's Wharf to the Golden Gate bridge. You can get great evening photos and pick up dinner at the deli section of the grocery store (Safeway?) across from the marina, then eat in Ft. Mason or the marina park while the sun sets, if you can't make it further before dark. Cool to look into open garages in the marina area, some are total artwork and cool cars. If early enough, walking across the bridge depends on season, because it's usually pretty chilly and I make sure to have enough cash to catch a cab or bus back, but you should be good this time of year.

Keep a camera handy.

Being a 5th Generation San Francisco Native, I'd suggest : A trip to Golden Gate park including The Palace of Fine Arts/ Exploratorium/Japanese Tea Garden. The Wharf has a lot of interesting sights including Ghirardelli Square and the Maritime Museum. A tour of the Anchor Brewing company and thier tasty beers. If you have bandwidth , Alcatraz , or a hop across the bay to Muir Woods /Mount Tam.

Thanks all for the replies. You convinced me that I didn't schedule enough time for my trip (can't do anything about that now).

High on my list is Molinari's Deli. I always go there when in the city. HIt the bart to Union Square then jump on the #30 Muni Bus. That will take you through China town and North Beach and down to Chestnut Street. In North Beach you can go to Molinari's and get a sandwich then jump back on the #30 and go down to Chestnut Street. You can get off at Chestnut and walk over to Lucasfilm in the Presidio and see the statue of Yoda then walk over to the Palace of Fine Arts. From here you can walk out to Marnia and get great views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. Fisherman's Wharf is in walking distance but I never really found it very interesting. And don't forget to eat that sandwich as you are walking around. You can pick up the #30 bus again and get back to Union Square that catch the Bart back to the airport or the Millbrae stations which ever is closest to your hotel.

What ever you choose have a great time.

johnny80s, you're my ultimate HERO! It used to be SkooterG, until he got a job and ruined our motorcycle riding playtime - THE BASTAGE! Then it was Fairlaner because he's as worthlessly retired as I am, but Richard plays golf; and nothing is gayer in my book than playing golf, the gayest game on the planet! But your deep and heartfelt love of food makes you my all time HERO. Everybody else chimes in for Randy with cultural, political, mechanical, artistic and social things to do. Not you J80s, MY HERO! No fecking around with you, right straight to the food, with BART, Bus #'s and directions!

OK...not knowing anything about anything, how does this sound...

Take hotel shuttle to either Millbrae or SFO and pick up Bart to Powell St Station. Pick up #30 muni bus at 4th and Townsend and take it to Stockton and Columbus. Walk to Molinari's, grab a ticket, pick my bread, choose my sandwich, take bread to the counter when number is called and tell them what sandwich i want, jump back on the bus trying desperately not to eat the sandwich. Jump back on the #30 to Chestnut, or maybe North Point and Van Ness (which stop gets me closer to the views of alcatraz and gg bridge?), and wander aimlessly while eating the sandwich and trying to not look like a tourist taking pictures. Take the #30 back to Powell St/Union Square and Bart back to the hotel (I assume there are signs above or on the trains that tell you which direction you're going?)

Randy, you won't have to worry much about getting to someplace with a view. There can't be a city anywhere with better views from all over than San Francisco offers. It's so hilly that you can see damn near everything from damn near anywhere, at least as long as you're on the north side of most of the hills. Just go to Google Earth and click on most any of the "street view" cameras; you can look down the street and see the bay, and usually Alcatraz, or one of the bridges too. I love the view from a place called Twin Peaks, which could be a fairly hefty taxi fare, depending on where you started. But just type "Twin Peaks San Francisco, CA" into G.E. and then click on one of the street view icons to see it. For that matter, click on icons all over the city and you'll see what I'm talking about. It's pretty gorgeous.

If you go down to the wharf don't forget to pop in at The Buena Vista Cafe for an Irish Coffee. The drink was perfected there. The cable-car turn-around is right across the street. If you miss visiting them you can still have an Irish Coffee at their S.F. airport location inside the terminal. :drinks:

Randy - When your mission is completed please request membership in Los Robustos. I have a feeling you are a shoe in.

Enjoy

Not sure my membership will be granted. Probably would have before I dropped 40# last year (oh, the shame...). But, if Molinari's is what I think it is, I might come a knock knock knockin on yer door.

Forget all the damn buses. Within the area you're talking about, SF is a walking city, and those destinations are very close to BART, and close together. And we have the benefit of sunlight till late.

Hell, how about if I just meet you in the city after work (I'm just across the bay in Berkeley) and take you on a nice walk, with spectacular views. And we'll have dinner in North Beach, which is where you're planning to go anyway. Just name the date and time, and I'll see if you pick the one day when Fang needs me to pick the shards out of her feet or something.

Here's what I would suggest:

Deal...PM sent on the when. Let me know the where.

Tomorrow's the Big Day. Randy's already in town. We're meeting up tomorrow (Wednesday) evening around 6PM at the Embarcadero BART station top of the escalator under the Hyatt. A nice walk and then dinner in North Beach.

Had a fantastic tour and a top notch tour guide! Beautiful city - only wish I had more time here. I'll be back and look forward to seeing more and maybe meeting up with others.
