One trick that seems to work for me that was not mentioned in the article -- reach back with your left foot and ground the center stand. It has more metal than the sidestand and it will not kill the engine when you do this.

I installed one of the trigger magnets on my DL1000 and it seemed to help. I used to use Red Wing Steel Toed motorcycle boots, and these helped too. Some bikes do tend to trigger better than others. The FJR isn't too bad in that regard, but its not as reliable at triggering lights as my old ST1100 was.

Around here if you've waited for a full light cycle, and you haven't gotten a green, you can run the light after checking to be sure its safe and you aren't likely to get a ticket for it.

Then, of course, in places where right turn on red is legal, you can always try the right turn and u-turn method.

Finally, if there's other traffic, pull up a bit and let a car behind you trigger the light.

I do this all the time. Sit there and the guy behind you is even more impatient than you.. You pull forward, then turn around give him the come closer motion with your hand. 95% of the time they'll up and the light gets triggered. That other 5% I think they think you are calling them out..

But I'll also admit to having to run a red. Did it once and directly in front of a cop coming the other direction. I could see his reaction when I did it. Sure enough, he pulled a U'ie and hunted me down. No ticket, and because I couldn't safely proceed straight to do a U'ie myself (divided left turn lane). He gave me a little lecture and told me to be more careful. I figger he was just doing his job, no harm, no foul.
