Oh I forgot one.
Call your insurance company and have them fax you a Canadian Endorsement for your policy. If you have an accident in Canada, you'll be very glad that you have that piece of paper. The insurance company should do it at no charge.

+1 on taking the passport with you

Also, if a city has a beltway bypass, take it (Columbus, Indianapolis, Peoria, etc etc).
+1 on the bypasses, 280 around Davenport will avoid the big mess, 474 around Peoria, 74 in Peoria is being rebuild, one lane, closed exits, mostly one lane, lots of orange barrels.

+1 on the bypasses. I went through I-74\I-80 route a couple of weeks ago. Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Peoria especially.

The Canada shortcut is not necessarily faster, as it all depends on customs and traffic. I spent 2 hours waiting to cross from NY, then got caught in some very congested traffic through Toronto. Toss the dice on this one.

Davenport straight though on I-80 is fine, I-74 through Davenport is closed at the river bridge. I-280 should be OK. I-80 has more services, but I-280 has much less traffic. Watch for radar in ILL and IA.

Going west, I prefer I-80 to I-76 to I-70 through CO. I-80 through NE is boring, but still much better than I-70 through MO and KS.

For an Interstate, I-70 behind Denver is very fast and very curvy. I guarantee you will not fall asleep on this stretch!

Enjoy yourself!

Another thing to keep in mind is that Radar Detectors are illegal. If your caught with one it _will_ be confiscated, you _will_ get a hefty fine and you _wont_ get the unit back, ever....

Take it off the dash and pack it in the gear well out of site and you should be fine.

Radar dectors are legal in all states except Virginia, Washington DC and military bases radar detectors are illegal and commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs. It doesn't sound like you will be going through Canada but Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan detector's are legal. My advise from truck driving is stay out of Canada but on the bike you should be ok. To each their own. PM. <>< ;)
