Trip To Cape Breton

Hey everyone!

The Bride and I are going home to Cape Breton Island to see the family in August . We are looking at going through the great U.S of A for the ride and come back Canada way home.

I bought a Zumo 660 over Christmas and we are starting to plan the route. We want to go through Upper New York , Vermont, New Hampshire to Main and take the coast up to New Brunswick and then over to the Cape.

What are some good places to see, eat , stay and nice roads to take?

To start it off, skip the NY State Thruway (I-90). If you come down in the Buffalo area (and see the falls, if you haven't, and from the Canadian side), get on State Route 20. Great scenic road, through hills and farmland and very interesting villages. Ride around a couple of the Finger Lakes. See the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown if you have any interest at all, and the countryside around there is some of the prettiest anyway. Somebody else take over from here. And have fun.

Watching with interest. I'm heading back to Nova Scotia from Port Dover on May 13th. I will be heading back thru New York and up the Taconic Highway.

I would give you some tips, but I think the New Yorkers and New Englanders will give you better, more detailed advice.

I will keep an eye on this thread, and if they don't do you right then I'll let you know the roads I would suggest based on what I rode and didn't ride in 2005 and 2007.

BTW, how many miles/kilometers do you and the Bride like to ride in one day...AND still enjoy the day?

I love the roads around Lake Placid and Ausable Chasm on Route 9 near Lake Champlain is worth a stop in my view...

Agree. This is a good ride and beats I-90 any day! Another good diversion is Letchworth State Park (Mt. Morris). Depends what kind of time you have for side trips....

Now, will you come down via Manitoulin and take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry or go around?

Just a quick note to stay safe and watch the RVs, JT.

I grew up in Cape Breton - my folks owned the motel across from the county arena in Sydney River/Coxheath for 16 years - right next to Riverview High School.

I spent a couple summers as a bellman at the Keltic Lodge in Ingonish and recall fondly my first bike and the Cabot Trail rides... and more than a few ignorant RVers...

Tell the Cape I said hi. Watch for construction nearing the Causeway too - looked like last summer they were saying that work would still be under way this summer. I think the were updating the bridges on the highway between Truro and the Island. They had automated, temporary traffic lights installed. I sat in one line that had to be almost 2 miles long. Granted, I was there in the middle of summer, so it was busy with traffic.
