I'm in the early planning stages of my next great adventure. This time I'll start from New Jersey USA and venture up through Maine to all interesting parts of eastern Canada.

All suggestions about destinations and routes welcome. I tend to stay at average hotels along the way and stay at fancy places at desirable destinations but I'm open-minded.

Duration is not yet set. It depends on what destinations I settle on but I'm probably looking at about 3 weeks sometime late spring.

You'll have a blast. I went to Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail this last August. I rode straight through to Inverness from Mass so I don't know about hotels and such along the way.

Some triumph guy is talking about going this year here stnet thread

2004 ride - Portland ME overnight to Yarmouth, then Lunenberg, Halifax, up to PEI, then down the NB coast.

If you like ships, fishing, or sailing, Lunenberg & their Fisheries of The Atlantic museum is not to be missed. Check ahead to see if the Bluenose will be resident. They also have one of the last cod fishing sailing ships as an exhibit.

Lunenberg & Halifax run hotel finder services, no need to pre book, just follow the signs, pull in, & have them find you a place, all price ranges happily served. Nice folks up North !

If you like nature, camping, scenic vistas, friendly bars or Celtic music, do the Cape Breton circle. If you see Natalie McMaster tell her I send my regards... My friend says the differences between the French & Brit/Scots settlements is hilarious.

Cabot Trail should be number one on your list of things to do. If you're camping out, I understand that Meat Cove is good? We stayed just outside of Baddeck at a hotel, painted red. If you do this, then doing the Cabot Trail is easily done the next day. Great inexpensive place. Peggys Cove and PEI should also be on your list. Downtown Halifax appeared to have a pretty good night life.......but finding women happens wherever it does.

Also looking to meet single women along the way...
My mother is single. She is 81 but maybe you are into older chicks! :)

Mogan go here: https://novascotia.com/en/home/default.aspx

and order the free travel guides. There is even a travel guide for motorcyclists. I have ridden pretty much every road in N.S. so will be happy to help.

<HIJACK ALERT - Gypsy, I notice you have the alderslandrally in your signature. Are you one of the founders or coordinators of the rally?

I rode with BugR and an ST1300 rider from STN named AcadianRider last June. AcadianRider is a pretty good rider...he jokingly sent a message to me on STN saying that if any FJRs showed up at that rally that they would be "east pickins". I'd watch out for this guy. Trouble I think. :) HIJACK OFF>

<HIJACK BACK ON - Wheaton I just look after the website for the ALDERS folks. I am one of them but I can't take credit for organizing the rally. You should ride up and attend!! HIJACK OFF>

I would also recommend the Fundy Isles -- they are a group of three small islands that are tucked in the water betrween Maine and New Brunswick. Lots to see , but the roads arent terribly long. On your way to Nova Scotia too.

Also, on your way, there is the FUndy Trail, which is a ribbon of smooth 1-lane roadway that hugs a cliff through a national park. I think it is 6 or 7 miles long. Very Scenic.

Whereever you end up going, I would recommend staying close to the shore, that is where the riding is best.

Also-- if you are interested, I can give you the names and numbers of decent places to stay.

Good luck.

You're in for a great ride -- great tour destination. Stop at the kiosks marked with a large question mark and inquire within for lodging, etc -- the locals won't steer you wrong. Try to learn the numbering scheme for N.S. roads -- may help in route-finding (and interesting places). Spend time at Bar Harbor ME -- touristy, yes, but lots to see and discover there, too. Splurge for some time at the Keltic Lodge on the Cabot Trail. I can pass on PEI. Wandering up to the Gaspe Peninsula can be rewarding -- I thoroughly enjoyed my ride around there.

Stay in B&Bs, ride ferries, eat local fare -- like I said -- you're in for a great ride.

One caveat -- late Spring can be a poor time for riding -- lots of fog.

Mogan,

Good luck with your trip planning and trip...this trip is the one of two "bigger" motorcycle adventures I'd like to pursue sometime. I will be very interested in hearing your ride report when you are finished.

<CHATTER >My other "bigger" motorcycle adventure is to travel the Canadian Rockies and the pacific northwest. $$ is the only thing standing in the way of both. However, BOTH of these trips will happen sometime in the next 5 years. This is the reason I ride motorcycles...I love touring. I just happen to have ridden with some people on this board who have shown me how much fun the "sporting" side of touring is. I'm glad the FJR does both. </CHATTER OFF>

<CHATTER BACK ON> Wheatie, I am thinking EXACTLY the same thing. In fact I've contacted a couple guys on this forum about rides already. And certainly that's why I want to at least get a taste of riding in Canada once, probably twice, this year. I hear Labrador calling. And the Canadian Rockies. Hope I can get to the Banff area before WFO. We'll see how the time shapes up. <CHATTER BACK OFF>

A 1K rally up in that neck of the woods sounds pretty cool. I could do a nice BBG each way to get to it, then tour the area. How cool would THAT be!

Looking forward to hearing more about rides in the Provinces. Please share as much as you can!

Good luck!

I wouldn't advise Labrador on an FJR. The road across that part of the province is unpaved. However, for some great riding with fantastic ocean scenery and little traffic I would highly recommend taking the ferry from North Sidney, Cape Breton Island to Port Aux Basque on the Island part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. There are many side trips you can take from the Trans Canada Highway as you travel east across the province to the capital city of St. John's. From there you can return to North Sidnet via the ferry that leaves from Argentia. We refer to Newfoundland as the Far East of the New World.

Mogan,

My wife and I made this trip from Pennsylvania in 2005. Nova Scotia is a Great Trip Destination.

They have a very nice motorcycle travel guide that I suggest you get prior to your departure.

https://novascotia.com/en/home/planatrip/tr...es/default.aspx

We did all the loops. I recommend saving the Cabot Trail loop for last. It was my favorite and it may spoil the other loops if you take it first. Here is a short video of our trip.

You will have a Great Time there. Enjoy....John

If your interested in History, check out the Alexander Graham Bell Museum at Beddeck, NS. Truly amazing the things that he developed. Beautiful scenery and really Great People in the maritime's. You will enjoy your trip.

Hi Morgan,

I can definitely tell you that the Cabot Trail is a must ride road, I've done it a few times and is such a rush that I've even turned around to go over some sections again!! If you're coming from the US, the ferry from Maine is likely your best bet. You then have the option of taking highway or scenic backroads through to Halifax. To the Northern side (highway #1) you will get to see the Bay of Fundy, with the worlds highest tides, visit a number of many small quaint fishing villages with great food and decent roads. If you choose the southern route (highway #3) you will get to ride along the ocean, again with lots of nice little communities. Along this route you can stop by Lunenburg, which is a historic shipbuilding town with lots of shops and great places to eat.

If your looking for women, the Halifax bar scene is one of the best places to go. Check up with some of us locals when in town and we might be able to show you around, if the wives let us ! :black eye:

As Gypsy mentioned check out the Tourism web-site, lots of things to check out. Also, check out this link Motorcycle Tour Guide for a free copy of this guide, includes maps and all knids of great bike related info, plus it packs easy!!

Any other questions, don't hesitate to hit up some of us locals!
