Some of us remember "lakepipes" and sparkplugs in the tailpipes made cars fast. I tells ya, some of you young pups are starting to bug me.. ;)
And don't forget flipping the air filter cover over for the 20 more horsepower and that really cool ram induction sound!

Ha, ha; I like the way that you think, LAF! No kidding, on my small block '56 Chevy that would fool the bystanders into thinking I was running a Rochester Fuel Injection!

We had a kid who put a balloon in his spokes, sounded like one long fart.

Ya know Don Stanley did the clothespin thing when he had his first Harley.. ;)

I did that to my '73 Buick with a stroked 350. The sucking sound that car made at WOT was very similar to the one Beemerdons makes when he suck-starts his FJR.

Hey Bust,

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I stuffed a 427 into my 67 Camaro in high school and had myself a blast back in the day. In those days, I lived about 15 miles from Woodward Ave. in Detroit and used to love cruising on the weekends.

Zilla,

The only sucking sound I heard from that Camaro was gas tank draining. I think that 427 got gallons per mile instead of miles per gallon.

Anyway Bust

You mentioned, "lakepipes." Maybe you could help me out.

I'm getting ready to use the old classic song, "Little Deuce Coupe" in my reading class. I'm a reading teacher and my kids enjoy reading the words as the music plays. We'll be studying the words of the song coming up soon, and I was wondering what the words, "she purrs like a kitten till the lakepipes roar" meant. I was assuming that lake pipes were some sort of straight pipes or something. Since you've been there and done that, could you shed a little light on that for me?

Sorry (or maybe glad) I'm not Busta but I'm old enought to remember a bit.

Lake Pipes were the exhaust that runs along the body below the doors and exits just ahead of the rear wheel opening. They were on many of the 60's Corvettes. They were also common on hot rods of the 50s and 60s as mentioned in the song.

Yep! Around these parts they was called sidepipes. Them damned Kalifornicators wouldn't or couldn't conform even back then. Had to be "cutting" edge and rename even cow piss.

That was exported from socal as MD 20/20..

How about that? Know what kind of exhaust I had on that 67 Camaro? My auto shop teacher had a 67 Vette w/ a fuel injected 327. He had a set of used Corvette side pipes. They had an internal pipe and an external shroud. He sold me the internal pipes minus the external chrome shrouds. I welded them up just behind my header collectors and ran them on an angle from the headers to a point just in front of the rear tires. They were far louder than my auto shop teacher thought they should be, but I thought my 427 sounded wonderful. Little did I know that I had some hacked up "LAKE PIPES" on that car. I didn't even know they were called lake pipes. Honestly, the only time I ever heard the term was in the song, "Little Deuce Coupe." So thanks to you fine fellers and our wonderful forum, now I know. It only took me 39 years to figure that out; I sold that car in 1973.

Always thought a smsll block chevy was the best sounding V8 till I heard a Ford flat head V8 on a MOTORCYCLE at Daytona one year

To continue this hi jack..

Remember when 14-15 inch wheels were all we had? L60 N50 tires? Keystone or Craigar wheels? We called 'em rims in those days..

I had a 61 Ford 2 ton 4 wd pickup with 19.5 in tires on those nasty split rims.. Blew out a windshield on a new car at a dealership when I hit a pothole in front of of it one night, drove the mile home on the rim as I wasn't about to stop and retrieve the ring from the front seat of that buick.. IIRC recap tires were a hunerrt bucks.

And as has been said before... You would *** a hole in the ground if ya knew a snake was in it..

Jus sayin..
