trouble getting the tank up

isn't it strange that the first 7 or 8 bars represent 3.5 gallons and the last 1 bar represents 3 gallons? you guys are saying that your machines are the same way which means that this is normal...
I know when the bar starts to flash I can get another 50 miles out of it. I think when the bar starts to flash there is a gallon and a half left.

Soon as the weather warms a touch, let's go riding!!
You're kidding, right?

This afternoon it was rolling (briefly) into the 40's and the snow melt was only covering half the roads. I was this close to playing hooky for a ride, but I couldn't decide which of the steeds to subject to the ravages of the remaining road salt.

Yeah I wimped out. Must'a been the lack of testosterone due to advancing age that them FJR gals was talking about.

Soon, buddy, soon...

...trouble getting the gas tank up...
A tab or two of Viagra in the tank should do the trick.

in my defense, at least I waited until you got some good feedback before I flushed your post sown the toilet

Mine starts flashing around 160-170 miles on the trip, go about 10 more miles and put in 4.7 gal to the bottom of the filer neck w/ bike centered. After fill-up gauge comes off of full at 13 miles. Today, with 145 miles on the trip had one bar showing on start up (side stand), started flashing before I stood her up to drive off, went 2 miles then it reverted back to "Trip." Will fill-up after riding to work tomorrow.

Reading TFM shows that when the bar starts flashing I've got 1.45 US gal remaining...that plus my 4.7 gal fill-up leaves 0.46 gal of "missing" fuel of the 6.61 gal total capacity. Is the approx half gal (well...approx 0.2 for the 10 mi travel while flashing) to be considered unusable "expansion space" of the tank or is this just "slop" in the indicating system, as so often fuel indicating systems are only certified true when the tank is empty and the gauge reads zero.

See, you used the word "certified," so you're making some not-so-valid assumptions here. :D

Fuel gauges are not calibrated scientific devices. Never have been, never will be. (Unless some agency decrees it.) Probably why cruisers don't even bother with them.

Since Yammy knows we take our bikes more than half a tank from the nearest station, they gave us a thing that indicates generally how much stuff we're carrying around, from "as much as we can hold" down to "better find a station, mister." Nothing about it says "You have 39.857 fluid ounces remaining."

Winter gas screws up the mileage, and thus the expected odometer-per-fuel-gauge-bar that we like to get.

I've gone 60 miles when it starts flashing and was unable to put 6 gallons in it, and I've gone 20 and then put 6.3 gallons in (meaning IT WAS TIME TO FILL!)

How the hell are ya? Soon as the weather warms a touch, let's go riding!!

Sounds great I am tied up the last week of March with our PGA Tour event but outside of that week I have some leeway

Sorry, it's kinda hard to put sarcasm in print. Was referring to a running joke in aviation about the fuel indicating system only being "certified" to be indicating properly when empty. :D

I'm actually really pleased with the predictability and range of the feej, although when I started paying attention to the gas thing I thought that putting in 4.7 gal when the bar started flashing was a bit low but after putting the math to it, it seems to fairly accurate an dependable. Started getting paranoid about the imploding tank thing.

OP: Sorry I can't help you here, haven't pulled the tank yet, too busy riding. Maybe this weekend just for fun.

Way to go, fairly-new guy....anyone who'd yank a tank for fun is A-OK with me!

Split the cases and check your big-end bearings while you're at it...take plenty-o-pics! :blum:

Interesting side note / observation, I can't recall anyone reporting an imploded fuel tank in quite some time now. I suppose that the big changes in tank pressure, along with the gas geysers phenomenon, are related to the higher heat of summer?

I've been wanting to disassemble a gas tank cap to get a look-see at the pressure relief gizmos inside.

Anyone got an extra one laying around that they want to take apart?

Yesterday I tracked this for you Special K. The first time the bar started to flash I rode 49.9 miles more and put in 6 gallons. I think I had 243 miles on the trip. The second time it started to flash I rode 39.7 miles and put in 5.5 gallons.

All the miles where done on the freeway going slightly faster than traffic and included some lane splitting. I stopped early for the second fill up because I had to fuel up myself at Wendy's.

THIS GUY just replaced his gas cap. Maybe he's game for some exploratory surgery? :dribble:

Truck is down so I'm two wheels only at the moment and can't afford the down time to split the cases...anybody have a wrecked engine taking up space? :hyper:

thanks so much for doing that!

sounds like you have about 1.5-1.8 gallons left when the last bar starts flashing. In my experience the last bar is worth about 1.5 gallons BEFORE it starts flashing. This means that the last bar is worth the ~3 gallons...which is what I am putting back into it. Weird...doesn't make sense that the last bar would be worth half the tank's capacity, but sounds like it's true. Am I missing something here?

Since you've not had the tank up, never mind the fuel pump assembly out, here's a clue. The pump assembly is part of the sending unit and float arm. It's a bit tricky to get all that in and out of the tank w/o tweaking the float arm. The fuel gauge is a relative device, not an absolute one. More than likely your float arm is tweaked at a different angle than the average FJR's.

The thing to do here is run your bike out of gas, while paying attention to how long it takes. If you know that once you hit reserve you have XX miles, (or XXX miles), you're not going to start stressing about it hitting reserve. I know I can get 64 miles or more on real gas, but call it at 50 miles on E10.

Sure, you could pull the pump assy. and try some trial and error tweaking of the float arm until you're happy with the results. That ought to keep you busy for a couple of weeks. But really, does it matter if you know what your range is?

Funny you mention it.....got a 46k 2004 motor sitting in my garage, currently playing the part of a laundry table. Needs a head bolt milled out (stripped hex head) so I can pull the head and assess valve damage following a cam chain "incident".

You wanna come get it? I'm only 3 hours away. :blum:

(but I want it back after you fix it!)

There are a few of us that would go for that last part of the deal. ;) my 90k worn rings motor makes a lousy door stop in the garage. All offers considered! (you pay freight)

Gearing up for a deployment, so time is limited. Can't seem to get an afternoon to change the water pump on my truck...STUCK RIDING THE FEEJ...completely blows. Have to put on riding gear, listen to good tunes in the helmet, leave the house before sun-up and get hand full of throttle on a wide open road. Don't know if I wanna fix the truck. :dribble: If you still have it around Januaryish I might be interested...have no use for an '04 engine other than seeing the inside of one. My son is to young for a go-cart.

bet it was the car tire made your rings go bad. ;)
