Yesterday as I was riding to Asheville, NC I hit a piece of lumber in my lane on I-75. I was riding at 75mph when it happened and it bent the front wheel pretty bad and the rear also but not enough to cause the bead on the rear tire to break loose. I was able to keep the bike under control and safely come to a stop. Forunately, it happened just as I approached an exit ramp and I was able to ride it to a Chevron station and call the nearest Yamaha dealer. The service dept. at the dealer had someone there to trailer the bike in within 30 minutes after I called. Both wheels, bearings, seals, tires should be in today to get me back on the road. When I get back home I want to have my local dealer check it over for other damage. What else should I be concerned about?

The only other thing I can think of to your eye on would be fork seals.

And your lucky. I had a hunk of firewood fall off a pickup in front of me once. Clipped the front wheel, came under the bike (GS500) and knocked the chain off the rear. The chain wrapped around the front and went into the case. I somehow managed to keep the bike upright as I slid into the gravel on the roadside.

Don't tell anyone, but I used a massive glob of JBWeld to patch the hole, filled the bike with oil. Put another master link on the chain and sold that black and purple GS500 to the first person that came along.

Wow, sorry to hear about the mishap, glad you managed to keep the bike upright.

From your post it sounds like you are replacing the wheels, are they both completely destroyed? I ask because there are shops that specialize in straightening bent rims, so if you're paying for this yourself that might be a cheaper option.

i once bought a bike where someone had done some quick-and-dirty fixes to get it sold. after spending the purchase price in repairs to get it truly road worthy, i then sold it. worst experience of any vehicle ownership i've ever had; all thanks to the ethics of a stranger.

i vowed never to do that to anyone else. i'll either fix it right or scrap it before i do that to anyone else.

Was it a GS500?

And to the OP, good job staying upright. Just two days ago, the traffic report on the radio was talking about a damn 4 x 4 (and I don't mean a truck) in the freeway here, and yesterday it was a CINDER BLOCK! :eek:mg: I don't know who left this crap in the road, exactly, but I'm damn sure they weren't riding a motorcycle. WHUCK is wrong with people???

Update:

My insurance was going to cover all the repairs.

However, on Friday morning while waiting for the parts to arrive to the dealer I started talking to the owner about what kind of deal he would make me on the 2010 FJR in his showroom. I now am the proud owner of the 2010 Feejer. :yahoo:

Remind me never to buy anything from you!

good for you. I'm there too.

My rule of thumb is don't buy a vehicle from anyone under 30-35, because they need to get over

the I-get-ahead-at-all-costs perception of our market system.

Reminds me of the time I when in to buy a set of tires and came home with a VFR!

Come to think of it I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express Thursday night.

Must have woke up Friday morning thinking I was a politician with all this taxpayer money to spend. :p

I'm thankful that you didn't get hurt. And coming home with a new FJR can't be bad thing! Enjoy it and shoot some pics for us!
