After wrestling with the cantankerous #1 cap over the years I now have a two piece cap. I separated the top rubbery portion from the lower portion. The top portion is still intact and can be moved up and down the wire. The lower portion which connects to the plug and the wire is a hard plastic cylinder encased in a thin rubber membrane.

I now remove the top stopper and slide it up the wire out of the way. Then I loop a short string, shoelace, etc. around the lower portion and pull upward and extract it. After installing the plug I reconnect the cap to the plug and then slide the soft rubber stopper back down the wire and put the cork back in the bottle.

 
It's not that much trouble to replace, actually, but you know that. The fact that they're about 80 bucks each might mean you're good to go as you are. :)

 
When I get home I'll look through my pile. Cheap, but not free-I've given away far too much already, and CFO is gettin torqued.

Not the wire, the boot. The wires are worse, though . . . They're part of the coils, you can't replace just the wire, you have to buy a coil with 2 wires built into it.

You're shittin' me? :blink: The wires aren't tailored and connected to the boot for that kind of coin. It looked like they were part of the package in the schematic I looked at but I guess I was wrong.

I think I'll go polish my plug wires and boots and keep them well preserved!

Here's the 1-4 coil, which I replaced because 4 was missing, especially at idle, and I found this crud on the wire where it goes into the coil body. It shows that the wires are part of the coil, not a plug-in piece like you'd see on your car. No, that's not a detachable snap fitting. The wires are manufactured into the coil, and it's a single part number for coil and two wires, but without the boots.

I used that trick on an 80's Ford Escort many years ago, works well.

Actually, those wires are replaceable, it's just not a quick unplug-plug in kinda deal. Release the retainer and they unscrew just like the caps.

 
But they're not sold separately by Yamaha, which would mean (Heaven forbid) going generic to replace just the wire. Then you've got non-Yammy stuff on the bike, and there's no telling what's gonna happen after that!!

Any 7mm or 8mm (not sure which right now) solid core wire will work-NAPA and other parts stores have bulk plug wire, used on small engine and industrial motors.
