R.I.P. Our FJR Riding Friend
My wife and I have about 9k miles 2 up on the FJR. She picked the FJR over the BMW R1200RT for her comfort, and is happier now that we upgraded from the stock seat. She has a seat built-in backrest for lower back support and leans her upper back on the top case. We have ordered passenger peg extenders as she thought that might be even better.
You can see our reports in Ride Reports, we ride a lot together and we love the FJR. I think a Russell, or Mayer (sp?) seat would be better than the Corbin we have, but the Corbin is better than the stock.
Our longest day 2up was 863 miles from Cortez, Co to Fallon Ne. That was on the stock seat. Our asses were extremely sore. I think that distance on the Corbin would also be unpleasant, but not as bad. The 2006 seats seem better than the previous designs, but your butt don't know til it tries it. Sherri and I have done 400+ mile days on the Corbin with maybe a little butt burn at the end, but really not bad at all.
Bottom line: Sherri likes riding 2up on the FJR, she did not on my 1977 BMW, she likes our bike and she even scoffs at other bikes. It must be pretty good for 2up. If you ever ride with us, she'll take a picture or 200 of you too!

To offer a fellow rider an estimate of your wife's weight is acceptable if it's to help a fellow rider AND his wife, AND offered with the husbands weight also listed, ie: reported as a team. (your just helping another "little" lady.) :friends:
BUT, to talk freely and publicly about a new ,heavy duty, rear shock is like buying your wife a larger dress size than she wears, for Christmas. A guy could loose his bike and riding privileges! :argue:
In a worst case scenario, he would never have to worry about crushing anything sliding up against the gas tank too hard again! :dwarf:

If you can wait a month (hopefully less), I will let you know how the FJR1300AE feels compared to a GL1800A.
I love my GL1800A and my daughter has logged over 20,000 miles with me this past year and she loves it.
Since a West Texas BBQ ride for me is at LEAST a 500 mile day ride (and I do a couple of them a month), I will see quickly how comfortable the FJR1300 is!

CK, my wife is 5'4" 115 lbs. I have a Yamaha top case and sheepskin seat pads.
My wife is comfortable for many miles.
If your wife does fine on the ST, she should be alright on the FJR. Everybody is different though so, YMMV. The stock seat is hard for some.
Bikers need soft asses.

The FJR just looks good to me: however, my wife wanted a goldwing. Not me, not yet. I felt kind of like you about the Wing, “Just can't bring myself to ride a GL. That seems to confirm I'm old.” Plus, it’s larger & much heavier than an FJR. Anyway, a little over a week ago, my wife bought us a new 06A. We’re probably about average size. We’ve taken 5 or 6 trips so far, the longest being about 120 miles round-trip; and -for now- she seems satisfied with the bike’s seat. Her presence on the back doesn’t crowd me. But the jury is still out, so to speak, on the comfort and crowding issues because; it’s to soon to know for sure. However, if she still wants a Goldwing later on then we may make a trade.

My wife loves riding our 05 FJR. A few years ago, I had an ST1100 which I liked and she hated riding on it. She always felt she was gonna fall off the back. I put a Sargent seat on mine and added a lambskin for her and she rides all day without complaint. The seat also kept me from getting crushed grapes.
She has never complained about wind or cold or anything while riding on this bike.. she is a keeper.

My wife felt like she was going to fall off the back of our St1100 so I put a Givi bag and backrest on it. Problem solved! She really likes the Givi bag.
Shokdimn, Don't worry about the weight of the GW. I have the ST1100 and a Valk. The Valk. is much heaiver, but it's nothing you can't handle. It's really no big deal. You will have it figured out in a ride or two. (I was going to say you would have it down in a few rides) but I thought that may not be a good choice of words.
I still just like the idea of a Sports Tourer that takes off (one-up) like being shot out of a canon. The FJR seems to be that kind of bike!
Not that the St1100 is that bad, it's just I'm the type of guy that always wants more! Just call me OLIVER! :haha:

me = 5'-11" 185# wife = 5'-8" 140. The FJR was the first bike that my wife would want to ride further than 100 miles on. While day long ride can be accomplished with the stock seat, I wouldn't recommend it. We both have done 1000+ days, but with quite a bit of discomfort. That’s why we just ordered a Rick Meyer seat.
Leg positioning - fine.. For me, I just take a couple of Tylenol before a long ride and my knees are fine. Wife never complains about anything other than the stock seat. She does feel more secure with the top box on though.

Last year this month we got an 05. Without disclosing wife's size, suffice it to say we together exceed the reccomended weight yamamama published. We've done 400 mile days to and from wfo 4. Since then I've added the givi with back rest and toecutters adaptar that moves it back another 3 inches. Also added peg extenders, so she could stretch her legs a little more. Probably going to get aftermarket seat, someday. She loves it, last fall we tried out a new gold wing, amazing bike but she prefers the fjr. Good Luck

Me: 5' 11", She: 5' 10", Weight: CLASSIFIED Bike: '05 with Givi V46 w/backrest pad & toecutter's adapter, +4/+3 Cee Bailey, peg extenders.
Doesn't sound like you'd need the adapter and extenders. She likes riding on the Feej but she's thinking about a trike. We'er both happy with the stock seating. She's not super happy with the wind protection but your wife rides lower so it might not be as much of a problem for her.
Maybe you could find someone in Metropolis with an FJR who'd let y'all take it for a spin to check out the short-term comfort.

Thanks Alex for showing us the right spelling of Rick Meyer. I have heard great things about those seats. Let us know how you like it. I see you're from Grand Island, Ne! I used to ride through there often as my family is from Denver and I was stationed at a detachment near Fremont. Ah, the memories!

My wife LOVES the FJR for 2-up riding. She likes it so much in fact, that it's become a little hard for me to take any long trips without her.
We made a couple of changes. We added a Rifle windshield and Corbin saddle and both added long distance comfort. The bike is a great 2-up ride as is -- the additions just make it that much better.
I've never tried a top case, but we did get the removable backrest with the Corbin. We used it last year for a 2,600 mile, 6-day trip, which included 2 days of over 430 miles and the combination worked out great. We were both comfortable but did feel some burn towards the end of the day. As the LD riders can attest, the key to avoiding bad butt burn is to move around some, not sitting in any one position too long. The backrest made it much easier for her to shift positions as we rode, letting her feel more secure. And I liked it because I could accelerate harder. On shorter one-day trips she prefers not to use the backrest.
Great bike solo. Great bike 2-up.
