We headed to Ohio to visit my wife's brother and his family. Wife took the kids out a couple days early to take in the museum/water park scene. She said, "Why don't you just ride out for the weekend?" Have I mentioned I am crazy about my wife?
Anyway, reflecting on it, I decided not to ride, taking the cage instead. Why would I do this, when presented with the prospect of a great end-of-summer ride, especially when prompted by my lovely wife?
Because on the way back, I had the chance to have my son with me while my wife had the girls. They way I see it, the opportunities to have quality 1:1 time with my son, on a road trip and all that entails, are far more fleeting than the enjoyment of a weekend ride. Hopefully, I'll be riding long after he grows up and moves out.
It was great. Passive thinking, wandering conversation, periods of silence, music, watching him read, seeing a blimp, talking about how to drive (look far ahead!), and just enjoying having him sitting next to me.
Riding is great, and sometimes, deciding not to ride can be even more fulfilling.
