We headed to Ohio to visit my wife's brother and his family. Wife took the kids out a couple days early to take in the museum/water park scene. She said, "Why don't you just ride out for the weekend?" Have I mentioned I am crazy about my wife?

Anyway, reflecting on it, I decided not to ride, taking the cage instead. Why would I do this, when presented with the prospect of a great end-of-summer ride, especially when prompted by my lovely wife?

Because on the way back, I had the chance to have my son with me while my wife had the girls. They way I see it, the opportunities to have quality 1:1 time with my son, on a road trip and all that entails, are far more fleeting than the enjoyment of a weekend ride. Hopefully, I'll be riding long after he grows up and moves out.

It was great. Passive thinking, wandering conversation, periods of silence, music, watching him read, seeing a blimp, talking about how to drive (look far ahead!), and just enjoying having him sitting next to me.

Riding is great, and sometimes, deciding not to ride can be even more fulfilling.

Amen brother ...

Spending ANY amount of quality time with my son is definitely something that I consider to be the "best of times" ... Riding is important to me as well and it is something I do every chance I get but there is no comparison ........

I understand ....

I am struggling with the idea of having my 9 year old son ride on the bike with me. I can get him the gear. He definitely loves to get on the back of the bike and begs me to take him. I am just unsure if I am willing to risk all that goes with it. His mother is 1000% absolutely dead set against the whole idea.

Yes, there are times when the motorcycle should definitely stay parked when there are more important issues at hand. Too many Dads make the selfish choice. You can't turn back the clock, you know you did the right thing.

Dirt bikes....two of them. Start the tradition with your son that you have with your dad.

Supposed to make that deal this evening. Buying a set of used Yamahas from a co-worker. We just have to swap the money and bikes. Hoping this works... Mrs. Redfish is NOT happy...

Oh, did I mention how smart you are? In case I forgot, you are just incredible.

Brilliant choice... my daughter is 21 now and we still get to have some quality time upon occasion because I did make some of those very same choices when she was growing up... you can't get that time back with them and it's precious time indeed! B)

Thanks for this. It's a pity there aren't more like you.

My sons are 26 and 30 now, but they still remember family camping trips we made in our old, rusty, POS Econoline van.

After my night-shifts, they would take turns to ride to school on the back of my bike - possibly why neither of them show any interest in riding.

Good choice. Kids grow up to fast. Next week for the CFO I will have dinner in La Crosse with my son on Thursday. Then on Sunday I will ride up to Eau Claire to have lunch with my daughter before I retuning home. I get to ride and see the kids. Win-win.

Right on! My oldest (now 9) hasn't shown an interest in riding beyond sitting on the bike. My middle wanted to go for a ride last summer...right up until I started the bike. Something about vibrations and sound made her want to get off.

To me, it's no big deal. If they get into it at some point, wonderful. If not, my hope is that as they move out, my wife and I can visit them at college and beyond on a bike trip. Sounds good to me!
