@sacmike: I think that's an F-14 escort plane.

This is an F-18...

I may be wrong...but I don't think so.

In any event, the shuttle photos are real cool. Not bad for a 1960s/70s design.

Looking through the google search pics with date restrictions I see a lot of photos clearly showing an F18, nothing clearly showing any F14 or F15 though but some do look toward that manner, and they certainly could have changed escorts at certain points.

The air intakes sure look like the F-14...but I guess I was wrong.

Likely they were doing a lot of handoffs in letting various folks from the different branches do the escort service. The image in my link above is clearly an F18, but we also see pics of an F15 as well.
