To our Michigan brethren; a friend and I are going ride from Columbus, OH to the U.P starting Sept 2. We'll probably cruise the area for 4 or 5 days. I figure that the temps will still be warm during the day at that time, but I can use all the inside info I can get.

What can I expect as far as temps and precipitation?

Well Bob, If the weather does what It should, lower seventy's are to be expected during the day Mid fifty's at night. Cooler near the lakeshore and breezy. Not late enough for the rains.... usually.

I've camped in the mid eighty's up there around that time of year and slept in hotels in the lower forty's the same time, soo...

Best advice I can give is watch the weather a couple weeks in advance and see how things are going. Should be ok though.

It may be rather crowded up there as it's the last long weekend of the summer and everyone heads up that way. If you haven't got a camp site or motel reservations yet, I'd suggest getting on this asap. You may be able to find something still.

Thanks for the info.

Yikes! That is Labor Day weekend, isn't it. Might better plan to go the week before or after. We kind of just planned to ride and stop where ever we landed for the evening, but with your insight, a little more planning might be in order. Thanks.

No problem Bob, glad to help. If you need any other info (lots of construction on 75 north of here) post up or shoot me a PM

Stop by if ya get a chance on yer way up.

Bob,

On the way up there (or back), make sure you get to the Tunnel of Trees! Michigan Heritage Route 119.

Very cool, and not too far out of the way. I did it a couple weeks ago on my 2 and 1/2 Great Lakes tour. Be careful, though - there are some 5mph blind corners.

Have a great ride.

I haven't checked this thread for a while because the email notification of replys didn't kick in for some reason. Sorry!

Anyhoo, looks like we'll be leaving Columbus Sunday, Sept 2 in the AM. Not sure of the route yet. Appreciate the invite (I'll bring ya some dental floss  ). I'll let ya know what travel plans are.

Thanks for the tip Paul. Looks like a worthwhile ride.

Ah **** I was thinking I could sell you some floss :( another opportunity at extra $ out the window again, sorta like the fjr plaques.

I'm about half way between Columbus and the UP, though nothing interesting to ride on for a couple hours in any direction :( You're welcome to mow the lawn, clean Garage, Wash dog, etc...

Who knows, I might be able to ride up to the Bridge with ya's just for the day... If I get the lawn mowed

Clicky here

Up at the north end of the Tunnel of Trees is a nice Polish restaurant called Smolak's. Definitely a good place to eat - the link above gives more info about the location.

When traveling in the Upper Midwest, be prepared for everything, weather wise. You can expect anything from near freezing temps up to mid 90 degrees. You just never know. It is generally cooler along the lakeshore. The lakeshore ride up to Copper Harbor in the U.P. is nice.

Enjoy your trip!

Bob, any riding plans for the Traverse City area ? Leelanau co. has, IMHO, Michigans best riding.
Haven't planned my route. For that matter, I may not do any planning at all! :) Road trips are more interesting that way. I appreciate the tip and I'll definitely look into it.
