'Upstate' means different things to different people, mostly depending on where you are from. Since you mention Americade, I'll assume you are talking about the Adirondacks.

Take a look here and select from the various regions listed at the bottom of the page to see the attractions and activities available in each region.

Will you be on your bike? Alone or with family? Interested in camping? Boating? Just looking for good motorcycling roads?

There are lots of "quaint" small towns scatterd throughout the Adirondacks and lots of old-time lodges. My wife and I stayed at a plece called Hemlock Hall many years ago, which is good for TOTAL relaxation (no TVs, telephones, WIFI etc). They serve breakfast and dinner in the main lodge and assign seats on a rotating schedule so you meet nearly everyone else staying there. It's on Blue Mountain lake.

Raquette Lake is also nice - not too touristy. Lake Placid is cool to see (especially the hockey arena for me) but is a huge yuppy tourist trap, but a boat tour of Mirror Lake lets you see many multimillion dollar "camps". There's some serious money up there. The family of the guy who invented corrugated cardboard still has a camp on the lake.

If you are spending time in NE NY and not in the Finger Lakes area at all, I would also suggest spending some time in northern Vermont and northern NH...very nice places to ride.

I'm a big fan of a lot of the roads around the Finger Lakes Region . . . I travel them at least once a week . . . but you can't go wrong in the Adirondaks and Catskills either . . . I get over that way as often as possible as well . . .

We're heading up to Rachacha in July. Looking forward to overcast/rain and lots of flat, straight roads.

If you get to North Creek (near Gore Mountain), stop in at BarVino and say hey to Mike, Maryanne, Anna, and Luke. Nice place, great menu. North Creek also has a pretty active schedule of events in the summer with things going on down at the old train station.

Shameless plug, my wife's brother + family...
