Hey, one could do a 50/50. The whole thing in 50 hours or less!

Knowing what I do about the parts of 50 around here that would seem a little tough.

But funny, as my father and I were just discussing taking 50 from here to CA ;)

Do tell! I see 50 goes trough a few "major cities" to include Kansas City, Saint Louis, Cincinnati, etc...I think the thing to do would be hit the most congested area at night if possible.

I smell challenge!
What fun is an ironbutt ride that anyone can do?
:D Excellent

Funny, after I made that comment I mapped it out from Cincy to Sacramento :)

Well arround Cinncinnati, or through it, it can be very hard to make time on 50. It's not a great road, I mean it is but it isn't. It's in terrible shape, and has about 4000 lights as you go through the city?

On through Cincy out towards Hillsborough, it's two lanes (total) and passing when crowded can be difficult and it's a huge speed trap.

It would be very difficult to make time. If Cincy is like that, I can only imagine other cities would be similar but I don't know. The thing is there are parralel highways you could hop on if you had to.

But it would be a GREAT ride minus the 50 hour crunch. Put that crunch on it, and I think after about 20 hours you're goin to be seeking alternate routes. I could be wrong though. Perhaps you can make HUGE time out west. I dunno? Here in the east, I'm not so sure.

"Road Trip USA" (Moon Travel Handbooks) has end-to-end, mile-by-mile accounts of 11 different coast-to-coast and border-to-border routes across the US. US-50 (The Loneliest Road) is #9 and they show it as 3200 miles.

Personally, taking two weeks with this handbook at my side sounds a lot more interesting than doing it in 50 hours, but then I've never groked this Iron Butt thing anyway.

I wouldn't do the 50 hour crunch. More like a week and a half each way. That means I could do 292 mile days and use the remaining part of the day sightseeing and stuff. I think out West you'd prbably be doing ~400 mile days and in the East, that would shorten considerably.

I think I'll ride to Banff before I do this ride, but it sure seems like it would be fun. I can vouch for 50 from Sacramento to Pueblo Colorado. I have never been further East than that on 50.

Actually, I might do the 50 hour crunch one way, then do the sightseeing stuff on the way back. Hmmm...
I'll probably just do the part to CO as quickly as possible, then enjoy WFO, and take a more southern route back home to experience some of that fine AZ late-July weather. :beach:
Or vice versa....either way might be another SS1K for me.

I have to say that the most daunting section of this ride to me is the State of Kansas. Despite all the maps (surely they must lie) Kansas is the widest State in the Union.

Even states like Kansas can be very interesting if you have time to explore and get off the interstates. US-50 from SF to DC, then head N and catch US-20 from NYC to Portland. Three weeks and this would be an outstanding trip.

From Berlin Maryland to Sacramento, Ca..US 50 is LONG! Anyone ever take it all in?
Deb & I made the ride in July/August of 2004

Started in West Sacramento, CA (beginning of 50 in CA) and ended up in Ocean City, MD about 9 days later. We came back on the northern freeways though (70 - 80) due to time restrictions. Was a great ride.

6500 miles round trip.

ps. 50 thru Washington DC sucks!

So, was it the unique things that your found, or the combination of everything you found that you liked? Was it very different from other long rides that you've done since it was on the one road? Sherri and I need to sit down for coffee with you and Deb and talk about this trip to see if we want to schedule it. Want to come over for coffee, tea, mile or____???
