Use Google to plan rides with garmin 550?

I was wondering how to plan rides on my computer and down load them to my Garmin 550. As I understand, I should get Google earth along with a $20 per year extra subscription for another google service which will allow me to plan my rides, and down load them to my Garmin 550. Does anyone do this, and is it worth the money? I would like to plan rides on those long country back roads around east Texas and Houston that get me out of the traffic and take me into the country. Do you think the Google service would be good for that, or are there other ways to do what I want to do?

If it's a Zumo, then follow the links above to the other topics.

If it's a Streetpilot C550, you are out of luck as they do not accept or use advanced route planning.

The Zumos are set up to use Mapsource (comes with the Zumo). I'd start there, even if it "sucks moist *** cheese" (did I get that right?). For my first use it has worked fine, and www.zumoforums.com is a great source of info to get you going. Once you get more advanced, you can weigh the advantages others seem to think Google offers--which I know nothing about.

That much is clear. It's a Garmin, and it's a 550, and you're a bit cornfuzzled.

But... please answer this, as it matters: What model Garmin GPS do you have?

...and please don't say it's a "550". That is not a model number. It's either a Zumo 550, or a Streetpilot C550. or something else.

The Zumos are set up to use Mapsource (comes with the Zumo). I'd start there, even if it "sucks moist *** cheese" (did I get that right?). For my first use it has worked fine, and www.zumoforums.com is a great source of info to get you going. Once you get more advanced, you can weigh the advantages others seem to think Google offers--which I know nothing about.

Even when you use Google Maps, you end up importing them thru the Mapsource *** cheese, moist or otherwise.

I've not tried google yet, but will say MapSource works really well after you go through the learning curve.

..and for us iMac users, the Mac version of Mapsource is called "Roadtrip" which just popped out of beta to mainstream.
