I cerently have a great setup for my SP3 GPS and my V1. The GPS is on a stem mount inbetween the bars, and my V1 is on a RAM mount with the RAM magent right above my brake res cover.

Here's the problem... The Magnet for the V1 is interfearing with my GPS!!! Its been explaned to me that the GPS uses an internal compass that gets out of wack becuse of the magnet feild. That sounds good, but no matter how its happening, when I remove the magnet, my GPS works just fine. When its there, it freaks out 90% of the time, losing signal, saying I'm way off course, or that i'm going 400mph.

Anyway, I going to try and sheild the magnet with some MU-metal to see if that works. However if there is a nother type of RAM mount base that works well with the V1, I could just change it out. I'm looking for something that the v1 can "clip" into or something like that. I'm not a big fan of Velcro when it comes to this, I find myself off road to much for that.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Bummer that nobody has been able to help you out here. Weird situation. Unfortunately it is one that I may be experiencing soon too. I too have my Passport 8500 mounted over the brake master cylinder using the RAM mount and magnetic powerplate:

But I now have a Garmin GPS on the way also. So I guess I may experience the same problem. If that does occurr, what I will do is replace the magnetic powerplate with a flat plate and use some heavy duty velcro to mount the radar detector.

Skooter,

Dunno if they're similar, but I've got my V1 radar mounted in the same place as you have your escort (although minus the Velcro), and you've seen where my 2610 is mounted (between the handlebars), and have no issues whatsoever.

I have the same setup as above minus the velcro and my SPIII is in between my bars on a stem stand, not a RAM mount. There might be 2 things that are helping cause my problem. One is the older SPIII GPS, it might have less sheilding and stuff then a new GPS? Also, the stem stand is all metal, not plastic like a RAM mount. It might help in genterating Magnetic pull in that direction. Its odd I know, but the sad part is, the magnet really does brake my GPS :(

Does anyone have the part# for a flat RAM plate thats about the same size as the magnet with the same size ball on it? I"m thinking thats going to be the way to go for me, just Velcro it on there really good.

Hey Groo. But are you using the magnetic RAM Powerplate to mount your Valentine? It sounds like its the strong magnet from the powerplate that is causing Ghost_Rider's problem.

Aye, the Magnet is the problem. :( Its about 3.5in from my GPS.

Yes Skoot, you might not be able to tell in the pictures... I've posted other ones in the past, but it's the magnetic power plate that my V1 mounts to.

Well then, that is encouraging. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like G-Rider's problem might be the old GPS. Fortunately, there is a simple solution - upgrade!!!!

I use the FJR GOodies ECM Shelf. The Street Pilot it mounted to the center and the V1 to the right. Neither is a problem to the other and they don't clutter up the bar area.

I use 2 different shields. The OEM 03 version and the Ahamay touring version. It only is a concern for the last half inch when the GPS antenna is extended and the phone wire for the V1 is looped up above the V1.

The shelf's are cool, but I use 2 different windscreens, and they come down to low to make a shelf posable.

Also, I think its clear, but just to make sure, the V1 is not interfearing with my GPS, the RAM mount Magnet for the V1 is whats causing the problems.

Hey Ghost Rider... this is just a remote possibility, but is there any chance that the magnets in your plate got flipped? The reason I ask is that the magnetic field coming off the disks is much stronger on one side versus the other. I originally had mine flipped, and they would barely hold the V1 in place... turned them over and they lock that sucker down tight. If yours got flipped, maybe the stronger magnetic field would be on the bottom, towards your GPS...

Dunno if this is a possibility, but it occurred to me, so I thought I'd mention it.

Good call, but sadly, mine is right side up. I'm still looking for a RAM plate with ball that will work. The only one I've found so far had the super large ball on it. :(

Try calling the folks at CycleGadgets.com. I have had extremely good experiences with them on several occasions. Very helpful. They may know of a solution to your problem.
