Taking off on the 29th to tour NW region. After riding back roads to Mid Ohio Vintage Bike Days last weekend I've decided to slab it to SD then meander. Any local info on preferred routes around the big cities such as Chicago would be helpful. May stay on I-80 to avoid Chicago and Pittsburg. At this point I may toss the map and follow the sun ;) Plan to go thru Black Hills, Badlands, Yellowstone, Beartooth, Glacier and some of eastern Oregon and Idaho. I guess I'll have to make a pass through Sturgess just because.

in Black Hills, I'd visit or overnight in Deadwood just to walk around an old west town that never died - visit in the bar where Wyatt Earp was killed and see his chair still hanging overhead. Go to the tiny casino (name can't remember) in town and say you want to join their frequent gamblers club (free) and you'll get a good discount on the room. If you overlap with Sturgis rally time, there will be no rooms available anywhere.

In Wyoming I'd choose a route over the Wind River Range of mts (Buffalo, Sheridan). nice curves on the west side descending. 3 road routes, can't recall which one, but probably all OK.

enjoy
