While a perfect way to begin the new year would have been a vacation spent exploring on a motorcycle, it was not on the books, as my latest squeeze does not enjoy riding on a motorcycle (yet). Although, she has never been on a motorcycle, so she THINKS that she does not enjoy riding, and I am still working on her. This vacation was the next best thing, a door slammer trip to the Monterey Peninsula for a romantic getaway.

Fortunately for me, my girl shares the same aversion to traffic jams and maddening crowds that I do, so needless to say we had a lot of fun staying away from the tourist traps and spent our time walking around, exploring, gazing at the ocean and other more interesting stuff - I will spare you all the juicy details and share with you some handpicked pictures I took from my vacation, if you are interested.

One of the lilies that I had bought her, we took them with us on vacation.

Our B&B in Pacific Grove, nice little place, close to the restaurants and a couple blocks from the ocean and far away from the tourist traps and traffic.

This used to be the Dr's house, it was built in 1893. Right next to our B&B and is now a private residence. Pacific Grove is full of such historic Victorian homes from the late 1800's to the early 1900's.

Rock star parking in front of our Inn.

Doirty bear on the bed..my girlfriend loved it ..and the rose..

One of the many old churches in Pacific Grove, there was one every few blocks.

You didn't think you would get away without seeing my mug now, did you? We had fun walking on the sea wall with the waves crashing mere feet away from our feet.

Pacific Grove is the Butterfly town and is known for the Monarch Butterflies, and has a butterfly sanctuary in the town, unfortunately for us we were there just before noon and it was a cold day and it was a only a rare butterfly which would dare fly. I will have to come back..

We explored around 17 mile drive one of the days. I wondered how much more would Jer pay per month to play golf on one these golf courses?

P1100103_stitchLarge.jpg

Golf course meets the ocean. Do golf balls sink or swim in the ocean?

Stopped by at the Pebble Beach golf club. Tiger Woods won here once in 2000, that was before he was chased by someone wielding a golf club as a weapon. Here you can see yours truly getting hit on the head by a brat wielding a golf club. One of the reasons I don't like rugrats!

Meandered our way to the Lone Cypress, but the fog had moved in as the day had warmed up. Such a bummer, I was looking forward to taking some shots of the Lone Cypress, instead here is what I ended up with..

P1100165Large.jpg

The fog stayed with us the rest of the way south into Big Sur, there was only a small bubble of clarity from the fog a couple miles around the Bixby bridge.

Still clear a few miles south of the Bixby bridge.

P1100226Large.jpg

The fog was rolling back in as I took the next two shots. It would once again envelop us on the drive all the way to McWay Falls. We walked out to McWay Falls but the fog was so thick we couldn't even see the beach let alone the falls.

We turned around at McWay Falls and enjoyed lunch at the Big Sur River Inn. It was virtually deserted and we had a good time sitting by and on the river.

The last sunset of our vacation, near Asilomar Beach in Pacific Grove.

I grew up in Carmel and graduated from Carmel High School. Didn't have much to do with PG outside of the annual football rivalry but it was nice to see the pictures of familiar places. I haven't been back to Carmel in about 10 years, looks like it might be time to make a road trip south along the coast.

I was stationed in Monterey in the mid-90's. It's an awesome (but expensive) place. Too bad California turned Socialist.

I play around 16 rounds per month. The fee at Pebble Beach is $495/round. That would cost me $7920/month. They wouldn't allow me to join and it probably costs around a million for an initiation fee.

I will never play there.

Jer

Really enjoyed your pictures. That will make a nice trip for me next summer.

The Navy post-graduate school is in Monterey. I didn't know that before, were you in the Navy? I can't recognize the insignia on your avatar, not being a military man myself.

Thought you would get a kick out of the golf courses on 17 mile drive Jer. I don't think 99.9% of us can afford to play golf regularly on those golf courses. :)

Wow Sam...You take awesome pictures. That looks like if was a good quick getaway.
Thanks AJ! It is a fun area and made even more so because of great company! ;)

Nice pixs Sam! The 17 Mile Drive scenic road is indeed scenic, but, it's closed to motorcycles. At the gate to the 17 Mile Drive I tried everything to convince the guard to let me in but when they say no motorcycles they mean it with no exceptions. When asked why the guard says that 15-20 years ago(!) they let a group of Harley riders in and they made so much noise that the people that live on the private road ruled that there would never be motorcycles on the road again. The guard was totally unimpressed when told that my BMW makes almost no noise. I get the feeling that there is something more to the motorcycle moratorium than just loud bikers. So, if you are in the area, route your motorcycle around Pebble Beach.

Awesome trip Sam...right up me & my wife's alley of how we like to travel as well! We stay at B&B's 95% of the time. Great images and man the weather looked perfect for you guys!

You bring back many memories. I was born on Fort Ord and then later as a Captain in the Army I was assigned there. The Monterey Bay area is a fantastic motorcycle venue, but as SFCJCA said above it helps if you are weathy. We lived in Pacific Grove but never achieved FOG status (Friends of the Grove). I was able to play golf at Peeble Beach for free because one of our friends was a pharmacist at Peeble Beach and got to play for free on a stand-by basis. Peeble Beach is not a town, it is a cororation and hence everything is private, even the police force. My Company Executive Officer flew a Cessna 172 under Bixby Bridge. I stood on the bridge and took pictures. The police and FAA were waiting for him when he landed; it was an expensive stunt. We had plans to ride to the MotoGP race at Laguna Seca in July, but alas that race is no ore.

As usual, great lens work Sam, with my favorite being the B&W in the fog. As far as a not being a RR, you did have an FJR on your hat so, technically a bike was present, right? Also, when did they start issuing year specific license plates here in Commiefornia? I need to get one.

Just as well Sam didn't have a motorcycle, as mentioned in reply #10, they don't allow motorcycles on the 17 Mile Drive. That would have have been a real buzz-kill if they had gone on a bike.

I'm surprised they didn't make him lose the hat!

Did they allow him to make vroom vroom noises as he passed through the area?

+1, Gunny; Fantastic Photographs Sam, but where were Bokerfork and Old Michael!
How come you are always wondering where OM and Bokerfork are?

Is there some sort of vendetta going on? Is Sam involved in it?

Great report Sam...no piccies of the girlfriend though...did she come along?
