Recently Iggy pointed us to the V1 Moments Archive. I own both a V1 and a high end RX65 Beltronics radar detector. Listening to the guys here motivated me to buy a used V1 recently, but I never really understood the difference. Reading through the moments makes me appreciate what it does.

If you are considering protection, I highly recommend you read through these little essays to see what the V1 is all about. I especially like the one about the moron.

Anyway, if anyone is interested I'll have a nice Beltronics RX65 for sale.

Thanks Iggy.

Bruce

Isn't "Nice RX65" a contradiction in terms? BTW. I own one too, so I know just how "Nice" they are....

I plan to make a V-1 my next detector purchase.

Is there an audio out like on the Escort, or do you have to buy the converter to get the audio to an Autocom or Starcom?

You have to purchase the V-1 audio box. And the remote display if you want to stash the V-1 in your tankbag. With just the audio you can hear the alert but you won't be able to tell how many bogie's or which direction they are.

Well, the Rx65 is in excellent condition so it is very nice in that sense. If the light blinks slow down for several miles and always follow a rabbit you will probably be OK.

I have a Marc Parnes light with the Rx65, but I need to get one for the V1.

I know this is like preaching to the choir for many of you, but there are many newbies here that need to learn this stuff. Don't try to save money on some of these farkles. Buy the best first or you will just have to buy it again later on - this is a hard lesson.

I want a radar detector with full heads up display with Google map inlay showing the exact location of the officer's radar, the type of radar gun used, and what kind of chase car the officer is driving.

I'd buy that unit! :)

The V1 is the closest you will find to that ideal. ;)

As a LEO, do you catch many drivers with V1s?

You already have one.... It's called a badge. Well, maybe not exactly, but it offers as good if not better protection. ;)

The Rx65 if fine. It tells you that there is some activity in the area. It could be a shopping mall door, or Lexus rangefinder or a LEO. You may never know. Read the V1 moments to learn the difference.

Yes instant on will defeat any single driver provided you are the only one he hits when you are within the range of your RD. The V1 has longer range and you still have a chance by being alerted to his targeting of others ahead of you. A short weak brap and then nothing - most others would of missed or ignored. Read the links!

Smart Cop does not equal ticket every time.

Instant on defeats all, regardless of brand. Smart cop=ticket every time.
So... while the "smart cop" is using instant-on on the guy without the radar detector, some other cop is leaving his radar on all the time, alerting radar detector-protected drivers to his presence in plenty of time...

In spite of condescending smiley faces, let me try one more time to state this more accurately:

Per Radman, "Instant on defeats all, regardless of brand. Smart cop=ticket every time." Instant-on greatly increases the likelyhood of your receiving an award, and if you are wholly dependent on a RD to save your *** you will burn. The RD is just another tool - with your ever alert brain being the most important tool in the kit. Run in packs for safety, follow a rabbit. Keep a low profile. Save real fast for severe clear.

The LEO is not just sitting there waiting for you. He is fishing and he is likely to target other drivers ahead of you (provided that there are others ahead of you - if not then take it easy.) When he does that there may be some stray signal that you may pick up. If you get a faint and brief signal that is your last warning that something is ahead. Other RD's are not as sensitive to these signals and are less likely to pick them up. Again, read the V1 moments.

Or just obey the speed limits or pay the fines. Have it your way.

I only offered this thread up to those looking to buy a RD. I wanted to share my experience and understanding of the V1 and how it can give you more protection that the other units. If you are buying a RD pay the extra money and get the best, even though it is not foolproof.

Key phrasing there. I run an Escort, have had detectors just about since they were invented, including a FuzzBuster lunchbox sized unit. These days, my success rate is about the same with or without a detector. But if the cop is smart, using the radar discriminately, and you don't pick up a stray signal approaching him, it's all over but the payment terms.

I want one that tells me when Pony or Pig are up ahead. That way I have a chance, although small, of talking my way out of it.

I'll be through there on 6/12 on my way to Crater Lake.

I have the V1, but for the price of these things, you'd think they would do all that.

And kiss you goodnight in a really good spot too!
