I would like to start this ride report off by apologizing for not bringing a camera. Shame on me!!!
Anyway, I was contacted by Lee (lgjohn) last week regarding the Death Valley Daze ride coming up on the 24th. Since I had metioned going he showed interest as well. So we met up today to meet and get to know each other and our respective riding styles.
We met up at the Starbucks on Rainbow and 95, a close spot for both of us. It was there we decided how we were going to get to Overton. I figured the longer the better on a day like today! We decided to head on down to Boulder City and start out at the south part of Lake Mead and wind our way north... Tempature was into the upper 50's when we pulled out.
Once we got through Boulder City and started heading around the lake we needed a quick pit stop... Morning coffee you know... By that time at the lake it was already 63 so I had to put away my Firstgear overpants. This was starting off just right!!
Lee lead the way to Overton. I discovered that we have a simalar riding style and pace. It made the ride up extremely enjoyable! Nice long sweepers and a brisk pace. At one point we ran into a park ranger coming the other way. He gave us a quick flash of his lights but didnt turn around. Good thing he didnt catch us a few miles back! I'm sure he wouldn't have been so nice!
So we make it ok to Overton and the temp gage on the bike says it's almost 70 degrees! By this time we are hungry and looking for a place to eat. The first place we stop has a "closed" sign in the window. But that does not stop this nice lady from stopping and telling us it's closed! Gotta love small town folks. So nice and helpful! She points down the street and says we should go to Sugars and then she drives off. It's funny because we pass her again a few hundred yards down the street and she points us in the direction of the restaurant again....
Sugars serves good food! (Thanks nice old lady!!) One patty melt for Lee and one tuna melt for me later and we are refuled and ready for the trip back. We ended up going back the way we came because our only other option home would have been the freeway.... Boring!!!!!!!!
I got to lead this time and pretty much kept the same pace. A little above the speed limit and having a lot of fun in the sweepers! I must say that 80mph sweepers are just a great time! Especially with the weather as nice as it is. We were lucky enough to pass another park ranger on the way back, this time sitting at the side of the road. Lucky for us he was facing away from us! Once again no lights and no ticket... Knock on wood!!
We stopped for gas in Boulder City before we headed home to recap the day and finalize plans for next Saturday. For anyone in Vegas who is interested we are meeting at the Chevron at Charleston and 215 at 7:00 am so we can meet the DVD guys in Parhump before 8:00 am.
In summary it was a great day. Tempature was perfect and getting to know Lee was cool. Similar riding styles makes riding with friends a lot of fun.
Thanks Lee!! See you Saturday!!
