What's the favorite location for a Datel Voltmeter? I'm getting ready to switch from the non-weatherproof multimeter to a Datel and installation space seems to be at a premium. And, any install tips? :cigar:

Don't know if you are set on an actual single purpose volt meter, but did you see on the radar detector discussion (group Buy???) that the Escort X50 has a volt meter built in???? Muti-task, that's my plan.

Not sure if you would be interested, but, I picked up this stick-on version from Kuryakyn (I got the black, not the chrome).  https://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=metric&ci=2695

I placed it on the 'B' panel below the tach.
here is a pic of my bike with that aforementinoed Kuryakyn meter....

Also , if you have a GPS mounted, check to see if you can put the voltage field on...my Garmin III+ has that option, so you can see the voltage at a glance in digital format.

in the pic below, you can just barely make out the Voltage Field on the bottom right of the GPS display, directly above the date/time field.

Here's a couple of options for the Datel in one of the FJRtech articles:

Datel install

I chose the lower right panel. (Panel D)

Guess I'll be 'doubling up' when I get my Escort X50 in the group buy. :agent:

I went with the lower right panel also. It's close to the battery, provides a nice spot to install it without hitting underneath, and viewable when I look down even when I run my tallish Yamaha tank bag. I installed without the bezel and it looks very clean and flush with the panel.

I placed mine in the same lower right corner, panel D. I used the bezel and right in front of that is where I had placed my "cig. lighter" socket.

Dang!!! how many add on's do you need to ride a bike? Is there a prize for the most electronics you can install? Does anyone have an Espresso maker yet? I'll take a Cappicino please.

I also mounted it in the lower right panel, but 'higher up' closer to the center; the 'lower' area area of the panel (to the right of the factory fastener) is where I mounted a Powerlet socket. I did not use the bezel, I liked the flush mounted look better. To secure it, I just ran a bead of clear silicone seal around the backside perimeter of the meter; holds great, and makes it waterproof around the edges. As far as install advice: after tracing the outline I wanted to cut, I drilled a couple of large holes with a Unibit (which cuts cleanly) then opened up the holes with a Dremel sanding drum; (low speed to prevent melting the plastic) for 'final sizing' I used a flat file by hand; take your time- not much room for error there when you see how little of a mounting lip the meter has.

WOW!!! I had no idea that GPS or the Escort have a voltmeter feature. I have a 2610 and an X50 already installed. Guess I need to read the manuals!!!! B)

That was one of my favorite features of my III+. But when it came time to replace it, I was dismayed to find that all the successors that I was considering had done away with that feature. There is no user selectable voltage field on the V or Quest. I haven't checked the Streetpilots.

Bummer. Wasn't able to find a voltmeter function on my Garmin 2610. Couldn't find one on the escord either. I guess the latter is a separate meter bonus--not an internal capability of the X50.

Still praying for an upgrade to the alternator. That beemer GT with 945watts is looking better all the time!

ETZ, theres also an undocumented feature of the Garmin III+ that allows you to read temp also, but you cant add it to the data fields, only view it on start up.

Mogan,

Look a little closer at your manual. I can't imagine Escort did away with that feature on the X50. I used my 8500 for a couple years before I found out about the voltage function, and like you I was just about ready to pull the trigger on a Datel unit. Give it another shot. Good luck!
