So, CBS is, not surprisingly, doing a Walter Cronkite retrospective on 60 Minutes tonight. What is surprising is Mickey Hart telling a story of inviting him to a Grateful Dead concert and CBS going into the first commercial break with Not Fade Away playing over their visuals.

What a strange world in which we live.

Joseph, I've decided to break my silence and forever on prove my ignorance/naiveté with you. Your insight *mostly* is far superior to mine.To wit, I don't understand the complete and total story/thoughts of your comment above.

There *must* be so much more, unspoken words, thoughts, ideologies that I just don't know about....

Please explain?

Posted seriously, BTW.

Joey babe,I was fortunate to spend some time with Mickey Hart in the late '80's when he was doing some of his research for Planet Drum (which was released in 91) ....I was running in that circle in fact Jerry's cousin was part of my wedding .....Oh the memories.

I personally have a lot more respect for Mickey than Walter, but that's another story -but I will say that only one of the two was invited (and is a member) of the Bohemian club in SF ....Uhh, and it aint Walter.

Don't watch much 60minutes, but glad they did Not Fade Away ........But I know it wasn't this live version that I've been saving for you .....heavy on the Mickey influence as you'll find out when you (CLICKY HERE)

...enjoy :)

RJ, thanks for the linky, I'm enjoying it. The one, single good thing to come out of the XM-Sirius merger is the GD channel.

I watched the CBS special last night (run in place of 60 Minutes) and it was indeed fun to see Mickey talk about inviting Walter to a show. Mickey said Walter stood backstage by the soundboard for the show. The story said Walter spent the first part of the show asking himself what the heck he was doing there and trying to think up an excuse to leave. But as the show went on he began to like the music and by the end of the show he was thanking Mickey and telling him how much he enjoyed it and how he now understood it all. Strange indeed.

Don, Micky Hart was one of two drummers for The Grateful Dead. He and Bill Kreutzmann were always (well, maybe not right after Micky's dad stole the money) trying to get a smile and a laugh from each other with their inventive cadences. Made for some really inventive drum work/rhythms. Okay, so the Windowpane didn't hurt either.

To learn that Walter Cronkite was a friend of Mr. Hart and that he went to Dead concerts is a bit like finding out that George Washington smoked pot. I mean, Ben Franklin I could understand, but this is a surprise.

Goes to show you don't ever know.......

John, thanks for the wonderful link. I am presently listening to it on my netbook and staring at my subwoofer trying to figure out how best to bridge the divide. I would love to hear some of your stories from that period of your life and will deffinitely remember to ask you the next time we end up on a ride, or at a rally, together.

Out on the road today, I saw a Deadhead sticker on an FJR. A little voice inside my head said, "Don't look back. You can never look back." ...
