So who do we go to for the rear shock?

Let's see... There is GP suspension in Auburn WA? I think.

There is the Penske shock.

There is the Ohlins alternative.

What else?
For aftermarket replacement, the most popular options are the Penske or Ohlins. Most people here buy them from KFG (who recently bought GP Suspension), in Auburn, WA, or Traxxion Dynamics, out in Georgia.

If you have a reputable shop locally, there's nothing particularly special about the shock, other than ordering the right model and with a spring suitable for you. The real expertise and magic comes in with re-valving the forks.

GP Suspension sells and rebuilds Penske and Ohlins shocks, I am not aware that they ever rebuilt the OEM shocks. There may be other aftermarket shocks from Racetech, Works, and Progressive as well as several European companies but I am not aware of anyone willing to rebuild the OEM shocks. Traxxion has discontinued the practice on the GL1800 shocks, they now use a Penske shell.

There is always Race Tech

You got the big players.

In terms of aftermarket shocks the big players are Penske and Ohlins. RaceTech has one, as does HyperPro (with progressive spring I believe :( ), maybe Wilbers.

As for 'suspension shops' there is KFG Racing, Traxxion, RaceTech, and Cogent Dynamics. Of course there are a million more, but those are the ones I remember being used and recommended around here and have experience with the FJR.

Sort of. ;)

While I have been very happy with my Traxxion Dynamics AK-20 fork cartridges, you got to remember that when it comes to suspension, the forks are only about 20% of the equation, with the shock being 80%. IOW, imho it is much more important to get the shock done right than the forks though obviously getting both right is ideal.

The point I was trying to make is that Penske, Ohlins, et al have already done the "magic" in the shock. It doesn't take one of the highly skilled shops you mentioned to do any type of custom work on that component. Unless I'm mistaken and there was more to it than that...when I had mine done, I was getting forks done at the same time, so I let GP suspension take care of the whole bit.

Ahhhh.... you are right there. Until it comes time to service the shock. After approximately 30,000 miles of use. Then you want one of those good shops to be able to perform a quality rebuild/service. Not sure if they can re-valve a shock or not.

When GP Suspension rebuilt my Wilbers shock, they completely disassembled the inner components which is necessary to examine (and replace) the inner seals and gaskets. It is very easy to change the shim stacks as the shock is re-assembled. The tricky part is figuring out what changes to the shim stacks will give the desired result.

Not considering your satisfaction with the quality of shock rebuild performance...

  • If the owner of this shock rebuilder does happen to be incarcerated, my guess is that you may not get the shock back in a timely fashion.
  • If he isn't incarcerated, he should be responding to all the requests for service. If he does not respond, incarcerated or not, that is sucky service and I would stay away.
I agree with you. I've left multiple VM's and as his cell directly jumps on to VM tells me, he's booked in. That said, I dropped this option and contacted KFG for an estimate... This is truly sucky service anyway, seems to be a one man shop, else I can't understand why his shop is closed, Sasquatch that is.

So anyway, if someone still needs a stock shock, pm me, I've got a 16k miles old shock soon.
