Rode up Thursday evening, about 340 miles one way. Did and saw lots of touristy stuff Friday:

That last one is a Tour of Honor opportunity. Nice pics of DC. We have to get back there

I love coming here. I usually come in January when all the fountains are drained for the winter so the opportunity to visit during the summer to see the memorials in their full glory is a real treat.

Even tho we'd seen the WWII before none of us knew that Kilroy was there. It's not in the Park Service brochure so I was pretty excited when I stumbled across him. We also love walking from place to place b/c there's so many little plaques, statues and memorials all over but you'll never see them on a map. Like this:

Living in the area now for the last 3 months and passing all of this history almost daily,

I have been so busy that I have yet to stop and really enjoy the true details

of what the city has to offer. I suppose I am saving all of that for when the

family comes up and we enjoy it together.

One of the comments by the friends I visited was how much more they see when folks come vs. being there by themselves. I finally got my crap together so here's a few pics from Mt. Vernon:

Turns out George was much, much more than we were ever taught in school. I highly recommend visiting but plan on a day trip- there's a lot to see and we spent about 6 hrs there. Also at the visitor center is a food court and outside the gate is The Mt. Vernon Inn restaurant (menus listed). We did the court but after reading the menu decided we should have done the other. IIRC the most expensive thing on the menu was about $24.

Welcome to the neighborhood!

Since Marion Barry left office, the last couple of mayors and especially police chiefs have totally remade this city.

After years of avoidance, this is a thriving place, people are moving into DC, and property values are going up.

Just watch out for red light and speed photo units. They're popping up all over the place and the fines have gone thru the roof.

I was up there with the family for weekend, too!

Visiting one of my nieces in Alexandria.

Hit the zoo on Sunday and mall area on Monday. Only bad part was that it was pretty damp. We were in the minivan, though, so no issues with the driving.
