They get you comin and goin.

Bounce,You nailed it. I was visiting crater lake National park last june after the Cal 24 Rally and this guy had the road blocked. Seems they were looking for some bikes that were travling at high speed but nobody saw me do it so they let me go. It couldn't be me im to old and I have bags and stuff :yahoo: The ranger was pretty nice about it but I'm sure he new it had to be me there was no one else there that day. He just said slow it down and have a nice day. Thanks Park Dude.

Nice that you avoided that one. If I'm right, you woulda' ended up in federal court (or so I've been told.).

Had something similar happen last summer riding up from Montreal to Parc de la Mauricie, north of Saint Jerome. We were a group of four bikes - A Hyabusa, a ZX14, my FJR and a Ninja 1000.

We travelled at a high rate of speed, the ZX14 lane splitting and in general hooliganing around - not being toooo crazy, but certainly running above the limit, with the ZX14 being the only real crazy rider among us.

At some point along the highway, we passed a provincial police vehicle parked on the shoulder - we slowed as soon as we saw him and were then well behaved. He started rolling after we went by - I thought nothing much about it.

A couple of miles ahead, as we crested a rise we spoted a police bike sitting in a U-Turn on the median and he started rolling before we got to him. Again,we were being well behaved, so he was simply ahead of us - the car wes a mile or so behind among a bunch of traffic as we had been carefully pulling away from him.

As we approached an exit the motor officer signalled that we has takng the exit and gestured to our group that we should follow him. We did, and lo and behold the car also pulled off behind us.

You should have seen the looks of the officer's faces as we pulled our helmets off and a bunch of 50 somethings emerged from under them.

They told us that they had a report that several different colored sport bikes were 'harrassing' the traffic, wheelying and in general distressing the cage driving public - and that 'one of them was green'. They figured we had to be that group.

But then, everyone knows that shaft bikes can't wheely and old guys ride nice . . .

After swapping a few war stories and receiving a few warnings about the aftermarket exhausts and modified tail light on the Ninja we rode off for a great ride around the park.

That reminds me of a funny story my buddy told me about an incident with the police and some fellow Baby Boomers while riding the twisties out in Marin County (SF Bay Area).

He was riding his BMW K1200RS [that's him ahead of me if anyone's seen my I Can't Drive 55 Video!], blasting along the winding, two-lane country road, when he comes upon a long line of stopped cars. So he toodles on up to the front of the line, where he sees a police car and the cop standing outside his vehicle, establishing a road block. He also sees several other motorcycles who had similarly threaded their way to the front of the line. The riders are on sport bikes and dressed in full leathers. They are off their bikes, helmets off, and my buddy can see that they're all in their fifties. They are talking to the cop. My buddy soon joins them.

The cop eventually says to the group of riders: "Okay, I want you guys to stay here and make sure no cars get by while I drive on up ahead and see what's going on with this accident." So the cop heads off, and one of the motorcyclists, shaking his head, turns to the group and says, "Damnit! We ride motorcycles to prove we're bad ass, but they deputize us anyway!"

i can vouch for that. i set in a federal "traffic" court for a parking ticket (thrown out because the day-shift guards told me to park there then the swing-shift guards ticketed me). the poaching and traffic fines are astronomical. try $500 for 40 in a 25 through a park (one i remember). a simple parking ticket could be $50 to $100. the judge is able set fines as (s)he sees fit. one poacher got a $25,000.00 fine.

+1. Couple decades back when it was still open, I frequently had to drive on Hamilton Air Force Base. We were repeatedly warned that the absolutely last thing we would want is to be dragged before a federal magistrate on traffic violations!
