Thanks! This cleaning went further than I did. I used carb cleaner, but did not seperate the assembly.

OK. Installed the new gas cap (already ordered it before I posted) and rode in the rain the last few days with no problems. I took my old gas cap apart, trying to switch key locks with no luck, and was able to clean the entire inside of the cap. I will install the old one back on when it rains again to try it out now that it's clean.
