Hello,

just a question..does yamaha change the corrosion treatment during the years of the pipe with Product Number: 5JW1248100 ?

because my gen I have that part full of rust where it go inside the cylinder head and I want to change it; I think the first models like mine have got it galvanized (gold colour)then they change treatment in the second gen..( in some picture I found it black)

I ask this because If I go to buy that part for 147 euro I want it corrosion proof 100%

I have a late 2005 first gen and I also have the gold color plated coolant pipe.

It does have some rust in the outside flange pieces that sit in the wells of the head, but the inside of the pipe and where the o-rings reside are still functionally fine after 90k miles and 11 years.

All 1st gens have the same pipe by the way.

Second gen plumbing is different so you couldn't use one of those if it does have a different corrosion treatment, which I am not sure whether they do or not.

Plus, I heard somewhere (not that it's accurate), that 100% coolant is less effective that 50/50 with distilled water. Unless, of course, it's a pre-mixed type like Honda and some others offer.

No. Glycol based coolant concentrate in of itself does not offer sufficient heat transfer and corrosion protection characteristics. To optimize the heat transfer and other functional attributes a coolant concentrate must always be diluted with high quality water, preferable deionised water at a 50:50 ratio with coolant concentrate. Glycol based coolant concentrate should always be diluted to between 30% and 70% strength as exceeding these limits would compromise coolant performance."

The seal between the cooling pipe and engine head is with a couple O-rings. When pulling the pipe, those should be replaced with new lubricated O-rings, or you will potentially get leaks and corrosion. Last time I did my valve checks, I noted the pipes have some minor corrosion but it cleans up and seals. Out of sight, out of mind, but my Wynpro AIR plates look great!

 
Definitely agree on getting new o-rings for the coolant pipe. There are two sizes, one is a bit larger diameter than the other two.

I replaced the cam chain tensioner after disassembling to check valve clearance, and also put on a new thermostat since I was already there. It's a bit of a wiggle on the coolant pipe, but I'm dry, no leaks. The old o-rings looked fine, but would not seal up properly.

I've only got 42K miles on this '05. It's running fine, the valve clearances were in spec, so I'll rock this engine another 26K miles and check valve clearance again.
