Maybe all this explains why most of my passing these days in the fastest lane, the very RIGHT lane?

Coming up US 101 Sunday on the second leg of my Phoenix to San Francisco ride, doing about 80 to break away from several cars.....

.....while they cruised at about 65 in the left wheel tracks of both lanes.

What are they thinking?! When they buy a Harley, do they get a manual with a chapter entitled "How to be an A**hole"?
So, lemme add my 02¢....you're doing 80...they're doing the speed limit (or at least, above the legal minimum if the limit's 70) and THEY are the a**holes?

Sorry, that dog don't hunt.

I'm NO lover of left-lane-bandits, but the scenario you describe tells me your impatience was fueling your hostility.

Just another form of one of the forum's favorite past-times -- Harley Bashing.

Don't know about CA, but at least here in CO, it's illegal to stay in the left-lane unless you're passing someone. Not that it stops anyone, but that's what the law states. And I think I read somewhere where an officer can't even pull you over for that alone...there has to be some other infraction before you can be stopped for cruising in the left lane.

+1, Gunny; Finally The Voice of Reason and Wisdom (from a man who sexually consorts with manatees, no less)!

Just ran 5,600 miles of US slab back to Vermont, where the remaining 2,400 (out of 8K) miles of CFR were 2-lane.

Saw every make of bike, mostly GW's, (and cars/trucks) pull the same stunt, pass them on the right like dcarver said!

Jesu Cristo James Burleigh, you're almost as bad as FJRBluesman chasing little old ladies in walkers out of crosswalks!

Well, if you guys read his post...there was the left laner gang...plus a blocker purposely riding in the right hand lane.

I thought he was right to be upset at the stupid actions of another rider...no matter the make.

Ahhhh...Now I know who the trasportation dept. has to draw those big *** white "hold short" lines in the middle of the road for at intersections. For you and all others that dont understand the traffic laws and theory here in the good ole USA... that cant figure out where to stop at, so they have to draw you a big ole stripe to look at. ;) . Ya see, ya gots da wrong idea fellow. The left lane has NOTHING to do with speed. It has to do with PASSING other traffic. You could be doing 25 mph under or over the speed limit, and it dont mean squat. What does matter is this....is you passin' someone? You is?? Damn, then git in da left lane and pass em. Is you NOT passing someone? NO? Then damn, git ya less than genius *** OUT OF THE LEFT LANE and into the right lane. SEE? Now ALL the traffic is more efficient, more safe, and more sane.

So, to recap...FORGET speed as it pertains to travel in the left lane. Remember kiddies, pass on the left, cruise on the right. So ez, even a cave man could do it!!

Wheatie: RadioHowie and Papa Chuy read just fine, what JB wrote is right below. He had a bike in the left lane and a bike in the right lane. As many lane splitting videos from Hans that I have viewed here on our FJR Forum, you are telling me he could not have split that gap! I fecking-A guarantee you Fairlaner or SkootyG could have "lane shared", RH and I sure as hell would have!

"As I got a little closer, the rider on the right makes a lane change into the right lane. I figured he had pulled up to say something to his buddy, but he would get back over when they saw me come up, or the guy in the left lane would move over into the slower lane."

That's all well and good, except (at least here in Kali), on most 4 lane roads (2 in each direction), the right lane sucks moist *** cheese as so far as quality of pavement goes. Thanks to heavy trucks of course. The left lane is typically in far better condition, making for a much smoother ride.

That said, I 1000% agree with what you said. I'm just pointing out why people are almost forced in to left lane camping. There are signs all over CA that state "Keep Right Except Passing" or "Slower Traffic Keep Right", but that is not usually enforced. They'd much rather go after the false threat - speeders. IMO left lane campers that do not yield to faster traffic are a far bigger safety hazard, but I apply common sense to **** like that (most do not).

Here in New Hampshire, we passed a law to make passing on the right legal. This is because it is easier than getting the "campers" out of the left lane. This is exacerbated by the driver education people in the state (including MSF instructors) encouraging new drivers to ride in the left lane so they will only have to worry about people coming at them from one side. I'm not joking. I heard a MSF instructor say that in class and immediately raised my hand to ask him to repeat it. He did so and explained the theory was to ease the strain of getting used to the high speed highways on the part of new riders/drivers. The problem is: That is what they learn and they never forget it.

So, when you visit our state, please try to remember that the ******* camping in the left lane has a state given right to be there.

:yahoo: Right f*cking on!

Guess I never will understand the lane blockers mentality, if you're traveling faster than me I will find a way to let you pass.

Why? Because I'm a nice guy? No,it's because your probably tailgateing and I want you off my 6.

Second it's always nice to have a rabbit to clear the radar/laser traps.

JB your a nice guy...and I try to maintain a similar attitude when this has happened to me....its hard! When their rude like that I'll usually put a little "skeered" into them....cant help it. I'm gonna get myself or someone else hurt one of these days!

Good job JB sounds to me like you did just fine!

Favourite trick of people around here is passing on the right in a right turn lane.

Scenario:

Your tooling along down a secondary two lane highway, you approach another secondary two lane. Their is an off-ramp with a long 'lead in'. Your doing 20-25km/h over the speed limit. Guaranteed, the *********/ette sitting on your *** will pass you on exit ramp and immediately cut back in front of you before they get to the median.

I'm telling you, next to Montreal and Salt Lake City, the worst, WORST drivers I've ever seen are in Sudbury.

The other thing they like to do, is KEEP you in you their blind spot. You speed up to get out of it, they'll speed up, you slow down, they'll slow down. Doesn't matter if your leading or following. They all do it and it makes me bat **** nuts, especially when I'm on the bike.

Don't even get me started on iceholes waiting to make a left turn on a red. As soon as it turns green, they'll FLOOR IT trying to make it through the intersection before opposing traffic gets moving.

... theirs never a cop around when you need one...

While in WV I experienced totally different ride behaviors from both bikes and cars. Cars would look for a pull off in the twisties and let you by, and bikes would yield the lanes.

Not saying they drink magic water or anything but geography does play a part in how much **** is in Richard.

Although get a coal truck on your *** in WV and you better be up to the task as they are relentless.

Last night I wanted to get some night driving in and have a great 25 mile run through a very nice valley. I was doing 45-50 in 4th, feet out on the highway pegs, Rife just a slight push up, jamming to Tom Petty. A guy comes up on me and wants to fly and so I tuck up on the pegs and crank it to 65 70 and he is there but a bit back. I know the road like the back of my hand and know there is a passing zone ahead, so I drop my speed, move right, wave him by, he blinks his lights thanks, and then was gone in a hurry.

I dont know what causes people to get so "power" happy on bikes and acting the way they do. I ride the six on all the trips I take with a friend, and we do protect our lane, but our lane only, and if I see someone so anxious to go around I will give up lane and signal my partner for him to also. Just not worth the hassle or bad karma.

When I had the LT in VT a group of Harleys would not give an inch, our host also on a LT, and knowing the roads motioned us to follow, well we took about 30 harleys on 2 lane road and at times had to fall into their formation hugging the yellow best we could, you should have seen the look on their faces as we hugged yellow and then make the next hop. It took about 3 hops and we were gone never to see them again. I asked our host about it and he said what was the choice? Ride the next 100 miles at 50, behind the most irritating noise you can imagine, or pass them? I said I was a little nervous breaking their ranks and he said well just think if you were a car, would they mess with you? He said unless the guys are truly 1% ers they are not going to risk messing up their chrome.

I dont endorse what we did but there is a mentality associated to bikers of the Harley persuasion, especially when in pack formations, that I just loath, and wish a 50 Cal could be mounted for such cases.

I agree with your frustration, but disagree with your choice of weapons. I believe a mini-gun would be more appropriate for that situation! :assassin:

Carver, yer an *** for doing that. Dontcha know...."passing lane....and suicide lane"? I love these neprt threads....just means that my posts don't have to be deleted.

In Ca the right lane is the the fastest lane.
