The service appointment that was made 60 days ago is finally here. I pulled in to the lawrenceville Yamaha dealer here in the Atlanta area for a diagnosis of the strange noises coming from the engine. This is why I believe we are off to a good start . The service writer listened for a couple of seconds and then without any coaching wrote the following on the service order. "engine making excessive valve noise, 3k rpm, most noticable on left side" Hey I think we are on the right track. The bike is at 22,000 miles and has been ticking since around 14,000. Will report the findings of the exploratory surgery underway as we speak. This dealer has repaired one other ticker, the 04 owned by trimantom. I hope they figured out whats up when they repaired Toms bike.

The ticking problem has been covered over and over in the various forums, but I'm still interested in how your particular case turns out. I'm having my '03 looked at after Christmas for the same reason. I've got 65,000 miles on mine.

The bike has been at the shop for a couple of days. I have not received a response as to what they have discovered. Wont lean on them unless it goes into next week. Bike has Y.E.S. warranty. I dont think that matters regarding this problem. Keeping my fingers crossed for a quick and proper repair.

 
Chipply,I think your bike will be taken care of alright.

I think your main concern should be to schedule weekly visits til its fixed to give it love,you know what I mean,wax on,wax off keep the baby looking nice,haha!!!!

 
Trimster. since you are so tight with the boys at the shop, I need a favor. Can you call the H.M.F.W.I.C. and ask how come I here nothing, nothing but silence from those guys. Wonder if they are skeered to crack open another Ticker.

 
Scott, when did you first notice the ticking? I'm curious since at 65k, you would probably be the highest mileage ticker I've heard of.

Update! The dealer just called to give me the good news and the bad news. The good news was that I would not be forking over any green stamps to pay for any non warranty adjustments. The bad news was, your not going to beleive it was that the bike had totally shot exhaust valve guides. WOW, imagine that. The dealer in Lawrenceville Ga has already ordered the parts. I inquired as to what exactly was ordered. The warranty parts ordered included all exhaust valves, guides and related components, plus a cam chain and adjusters. Chippster,I told you that dam bike was a ticker the first time I saw it and you just wouldn't accept my assessment,tisk tisk naughty boy.

The yamaha dealer said that yamaha had all the newer superceded part numbers in the system. The newer spec valve guides would be sent automatically. I was also glad to hear that a cam chain and adjuster would be replaced as a bonus. I believe its a bonus for the mechanic as well. The chain and adjuster replacement may keep him from having to tear into it twice

I'd double check just to be absolutely sure, if I were you.

My FJR is back in the garage after over one month at the dealer awaiting parts and the eventual repair. My hat goes off to lawrenceville yamaha in lawrenceville Ga.

I am at this point very satisfied with the overall results from such a bitch job of repairing the head. A receipt was presented that listed all the parts and labor values. total bill, that was covered by yamaha under warranty was 2195.00. This amount included a charge of 139.95 plus 84.00 labor that was attributed to the TPS replacement. So if you take the 2195.00 and back out the 139.95 and 84.00 for the TPS, then the valve guide repair came in at around 1971. 00.

yamaha replaced all of the exhaust valves, and exhaust valve guides. All of the valve seals on both sides were done and the cam chain and tensioner was also replaced.

I was lured to sleep with the gradual power loss that was taking place as the tick got worse. The bike is now quieter, smoother, and at least seems like it has more punch. The bike was ridden about 300 miles in the last day or two and I am happy to say that I would ride it across the country at this point.

I had to spend a little time straightening out a couple of minor fastener and wire routing issues, but all the big stuff seems to be handled. Bottom line is that Yamaha and the dealer stood tall and repaired the bike with little or no hassle other than the normal drag of having to wait on such a complex repair.

Upon my departure from the dealer I asked if they wanted me to advertise the good service that was given or would they rather me just keep quiet about where it was repaired. My thoughts were that they might not want to see another Ticker. The reply was to bring it on, and that part of what they are there for is to also offer service and repair on the products in which they carry. So if anybody has a ticker anywhere near the Atlanta area, Lawrenceville would be a good choice. They repaired mine as well as Trimantoms 04 model.

One other thing I did was to call Tom and ask about his totals, His was billed at 3200.00 and had almost double the labor hours. We came to the conclusion that the repair on Trimmantoms bike was the first one at the shop and required a lot more time in eliminating certain possible causes before the towel was thrown in and the engine torn down.

Sorry. I go days without checking posts. That's why I don't say much most of the time.

I can't say exactly when it began, but I noticed it off and on 3 or 4 rear tires ago. Wish I could be more specific. When it first started, no one could here it, except for me. I haven't worried about it much, until a friend of mine recently had his repaired. And, according to him, mine is louder than his was. The same ears, though, told me a year ago that all the FJR's sound like that. A few tire changes back? It could very easily have been much longer than that because I was choosing to see it as normal for quite some time. Probably a couple of years ago, but definitely much later than when the problem was first talked about on the various forums.

I can even feel it through the bars when it happens to be intermittent.

 
I have an 05' with about 28K that started ticking about 2k ago. I have had problems with local dealers (New Orleans, La) verifing the history of this problem. I now have an appointment with a dealer in Slidell, La to investigate.

Has anyone in southeast Louisiana or Southern Mississippi had a ticker repaired?
