As you had deduced its an issue with the stands around that time. Not much help to you but the FJ Club in the UK is doing replacement stands which also highlights the issue:

IIRC, it was specifically a 2003 issue (and earlier internationally.) '04 and up had an extra gusset welded in, so for reference, '04 or '05 stand would have been OK, not just Gen-II.

You do RC, the '03 center stand should have had better strength but didn't, and it also had an opening that would let water into the stand but not out so it promoted rust.

I had a lot of choice words when the bike fell over on the broken stand and hit my truck and when II went to replace this centerstand. Thank god I had least reversed the one right hand mounting bolt on the previous maintenance.
