I recently had e.mail exchange w/ Warchild concerning remote areas/ roads and gas status and, as usual, he replied immediately and more than thoroughly. A thought for this thread (pinned later if it becomes large/ useful ?) would be various remote areas one could come through on way to/ from Reno Rally..., gas availability (24 hrs.?) recommended restaurants, motels, etc.

I know the LDR's ride these areas extensively and could be a wealth of info. to be tapped into on this board (as opposed to numerous personal e.mail inguiries back and forth for info.). This way, all can be enlightened..... I know I would appreciate it!

his reply concerning gas coming down thru ctrl. Oregon and Gerlach:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gerlach has excellent gas, and reputed to now be 24 hour

pay-at-the-pump. I'll confirm next month when I go down there myself.

Alturas has 24 hour gas.

Lakeview does NOT have 24-hour gas, which surprises me.

Cedarville also does not have 24-hour gas, but does during working

hours.

What I would do is: top off at Pendleton, refuel at Burns, Alturas,

then probably top off again at Gerlach before heading into Reno

Can you get any better, immediate info./ response than this!!!! I think not!

I gassed up at Gerlach on my way home from MotoGP at Lagua Seca last month. Because I was riding with my son who was on a GSXR1000, we needed gas at Gerlach so we called ahead. There is a Shell station there and they told us that they close at 6:00. Perhaps things have changed in the past few weeks.

The station is called Bruno's Shell and the phone number is 775 557-2272 if you want to check it out.

... thanks for that heads-up!

One more road that has me curious is Oregon Hwy. 206 running s. out of Burns thru Frenchglen, w. of Steens Mtn., down to Denio Jct, Hwy 292 Nevada. Is this good pavement (anybody)..., too remote for gas on stock tank??? (275 mi. range) Is there gas at Denio Jct.???

I might consider this road on return route after Rally and insights would be appreciated :)

It has been about 15 years since I was on that road but it was a very good two lane through some scenic and very remote country. There was gas at Denio and a couple of other places but you shouldn't have any trouble making it from Winnemucca to Burns on a single tank. The B&B at French Glen is a very popular tourist spot but you need reservations well in advance.

Warchild made an annoucement at WFO that included the following:

The event will be a national rally July 27 to 29, 2006, one week following the races at Lagun Seca. He has negotiated a room rate at the Reno Hilton and will be providing detailed information to us on this site after the Iron Butt Rally which is consuming pretty much all of his time just now.

...thanks for that! I've now got a to/from route worked out via some roads I've pondered over for years.

My last inquiry...., even less traveled: Or. 47 running n.w out of Hines up to Izee. Went across n.end a few weeks back (Prineville to Paulina to #395) and loved that remote area! This (47) appears to be blacktopped....,(viewed at the n. end) Confirmations???

Thanks to any and all in advance, Roamer :)

I fill in Pasco, then in John Day (Hiway 395 south), and in Lakeview (watch out for the sheriff, unmarked white Pick-up). The last stop will get you into Reno.

If your slabbing it, I fill in Pasco, then, Onterio, Or., then Mcdermit (on the border) which will get you into Reno.

Im Chicken to try and strech that last fuel stop into Winnemucca, thats why I stop in McDermit.

The ride thru Eastern Oregon, lends itself to some high speed, low milage kind of riding, I think if iI could keep my right hand from twisting, it could be done.

Hines to Izee is paved. If you want to stay on paved roads after that you are going to have to go West to Paulina or East to either Logdell or Highway 395. I have not been on the road (USFS 21) that runs between Logdell and Highway 26 but the John Day Chamber of Commerce has a flyer titled "Come Ride With Us" that says the road is paved.

The best road in the area is Grant County Road 20 which is 38 miles long and follows the John Day Middle Fork River between Austin Junction (Highway 7) and Ritter (Highway 395). It was fully paved 4-5 years ago.

again..., another "thanks"!

Here's something interesting I just pulled off Advrider.com (Regional- West):

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Had the pleasure of staying at "Sparkplug's" in July. A motorcyclists-only campsite on route 199 in Oregon, just north of the California state line at a place called O'Brien. They have tent sites, mini-cabins and teepees, showers, restrooms and a river to cool off in. All for $10 per night. A great site run by Mr. Sparkplug, Kevin and Tracie.

I spent two months travelling around the US and this was the best campsite I stayed at. Highly recommended if you're in the area (route 199 is a great way to get to the coast).

Yes, it is twisty and even a bit exhausting by the time you get to the end. I recommend riding from Ritter to Austin Junction because the tightest blind corners are at the Ritter end, do those while you are fresh. Once you get to Austin you might as well follow Highway 7 to Sumpter and follow the road to Granite, Ukiah, and Heppner. You might even meet a few sport bike riders with California plates, its one of those secret roads that every sport bike rider seems to know about.

So, which of you all out there have their "booking codes" to make reservations at the Hilton?
Attendees are sent their reservation codes after HMarc recieves your rally fee!!
